As I've said in about two dozen other times, anyone with even the slightest amount of gusto, originating the green witch, would have at least been nominated for the role of Elphaba. It was the *role* that got the acclaim, not the actress. Truth hurts, flame away.

That's such a difficult question, because Wicked might not be what it is today if the casting was different. So much of the "success" of Wicked has to do with the original cast, creating the material to suit their skills, how they interpreted the material, and the fanbase they had coming into the Broadway premiere. If Idina were out and Shoshana were in, everything would have been completely different. The "riffs" that Sho does would be expected instead of "extras." Some of the songs would potentially be in different keys or even completely different material. Who knows, it might have even bombed. The critics didn't really like the show, but all pretty much raved about what Idina and Kristen brought to the show. The chemistry might not have worked the same between Sho and Kristen and it could have been completely slammed by the critics.

Could have been better . . . like I said, it's difficult to say what would have happened.

No. Pinkins or Murphy would have won it if they were up against Bean. Bean cannot act, Idina can.

I wonder if Bean would have gotten quite the same cult following- she's not a Rent graduate, which seems to raise actors to the level of demigods in the eyes of a certain set of fans.

Absolutely not. She has zero charisma, and even less acting ability.

i liked both of them, but prefered Shoshana's performance more. i think she did more with it, adding to Elphaba's personality. but hey, to each their own.

If Idina wasn't in the picture, Tonya probably would've won. If not, then probably Donna. THEN Kristin.

And Al, that's not the "truth," and I'm sure you'd know that if you saw someone other than Menzel play the role. The role (and as a result...the show) is UTTERLY boring without all the depth and character that Menzel brought into it. What was so great about her performance is that that boring as hell role was turned into something pretty darn exciting because she brought so much that ISN'T in the script to begin with.

Shoshana performs the role as written. She reads lines, sings songs, and adds no depth to the character. Just what's there to begin with.

That is a better question, ljay. I didn't see Brooke Shields though, so I couldn't base my opinion on much.
