I spent last week in New York and did a marathon of shows. Here's my run down with some thoughts.
It Should Have Been You
Wednesday, July 8th - 2pm
I went in a little skeptical but I have to say I enjoyed it. Songs aren't very memorable but the cast is first rate and it is very funny. Is it the best show I've ever seen? No, but I had a good time. Tyne Daly and Harriet Harris were stand outs.
An American in Paris
Wednesday, July 8th - 8pm
I knew going in that it was Robert Fairchild's night off was so I was prepared. His alternate, Garen Scribner, was very good but I couldn't help but thinking I was missing out on something. The dancing is out of this world. The cast is first rate. Beautiful music. Still, I wish I would have seen it with Fairchild.
Mamma Mia
Thursday, July 9th - 2pm
I've seen it multiple times and wanted to catch it one more time before it closed. Enjoyable as ever.
Fun Home
Thursday, July 9th - 8pm
This show broke my heart. The entire cast was outstanding. I was a wreck when I left the show. Just a beautiful piece of theatre. Go see it.
Fish in the Dark
Friday, July 10 - 2pm
Jason Alexander was great. The show itself was a little underwhelming. It was funny in some parts but I was a little bored in others.
The King and I
Friday, July 10 - 8pm
My favorite show of the trip. I could only describe this as lush. Such a beautiful production. Kelli was fantastic. I was able to see Ken in one of his last performances. Diction was a little hard to understand but he commands that stage like nobody's business. Ruthie Ann Miles was great as well. This is another must see.
On the Twentieth Century
Saturday, July 11th - 2pm
Go see this just for Chenoweth. The entire time she is on the stage, I couldn't stop smiling. Andy Karl was good as well. Mary Louise Wilson was out but her understudy was great. The show itself wasn't my favorite. Enjoyable but I felt it was lacking in something.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime
Saturday, July 11th - 8pm
This show blew me away. Alex Sharp is a revelation. He doesn't not stop for one moment on that stage. I now know why he needs an alternate twice a week. Incredible production with first rate cast. Another must see.
On the Town
Sunday, July 12th - 2pm
I was excited for this one. Tony Yazbeck is great. The whole cast is really good. Elizabeth Stanley was out but understudy was very good. Dancing is absolutely beautiful. It is a classic musical. Score not my favorite but very enjoyable.
Something Rotten
Sunday, July 12th - 8pm
I didn't know what to expect going into this show. I have to say it's one of the funniest show's I've seen. If your a Broadway musical fan, you will adore this show. Cast is wonderful. There isn't a weak link among them. This is probably the show that most pleasantly surprised me.
Overall, a great trip with some really good theatre. I was also able to go go Broadway Barks in between my Saturday shows. I saw everyone that I had seen on stage. If you want to see these actors up close, this is the best place to see them.
