12/30 "SpongeBob" Understudy

Last night Matt Wood was on for Randy Skinner as "Patrick" and I was just wondering if it was his first time as Patrick?

He really, is so very, very good and (especially in the 2nd act gospel song) brought the Palace down. His first couple of songs were not, imo, mixed to his voice but they fixed that. This show is so intensely focused on Ethan Slater, and my God, that guy is so into and committed to SpongeBob he must fart out bubbles...but Matt definitely delivers and aside from his "starfish" hat problems, he belted and blasted and came through as one of the heroes...This show is so, so, sweet and fun, and that cast is just incredible.. If you have reservations about seeing this just stop!

The cast alone will delight you and the set and costume design, choreography and direction is like nothing previously seen on Broadway.

My apologies to Danny...what did you think? Jorge? I know they are on GMA on Tuesday...Now, it's so hard to tell from body padding and costumes just who is who and what is what...I think Matt understudies Ethan too...

Matt does not understudy SpongeBob. A quick IBDB will tell you that Matt understudies Patrick and Mr. Krabs.

Curtis Holbrook and Jesse JP Johnson understudy Spongebob.

We saw it Saturday night. He did a great job. He received a loud cheer from his fellow cast members during the curtain call

Did anyone else think Skinner was the weakest of the lead cast members? It sounds like the understudy might be a lot better. Has anyone seen both?

Who was actually on? Curtis or Jesse?

Neither. Matt Wood was on for Danny Skinner (Patrick)

No, Skinner is great. Patrick is just underwritten here.

I'm sure you are right dbf22, "patrick" is underwritten...Skinner and Wood are able to take their roles and... S-OAR! S-O-A-R! "(Underwritten roles R people too!)"

I was disappointed by Skinner because he didn’t have the signature Patrick voice. It’s a really easy voice to do but he misses it in dialogue and doesn’t even try when singing.
