Back home over a week and time to recap my amazing Theatre adventures. For the sake of space I'll list the shows in order of My enjoyment and say I agree with all the positive posts on the first 10, and all the negative reviews on the last 3. The Winners!
Hamilton, An American In Paris, The Audience, On The Town, Finding Neverland, Broadway Backwards - a one night benefit, Hedwig, Constellations, The Curious Incident Of The Dog, Josephine. And those that underwhelmed me and other posters. Some really glorious performances here yes, but overall nothing to recommend them compared to My winners, IMO.
The King And I- sparse in so many ways.
On The 20th Century- so, so so.
Fun Home- despite the accolades, I expected so much more.
What were you hoping for in Fun Home? Just curious.
I was expecting to be deeply moved, but found the subject matter too depressing. The buzz was coming of age family musical drama, and when it ended I just felt sad rather then moved, or entertained. I went with two Theatre Geeks and we all felt the same way. Hard to imagine that this will have broad appeal with tourists. But then my favorite show from last season was Big Fish, and we know how that worked out.
This production of THE KING AND I is hardly "sparse".
You liked Finding Neverland better then Hedwig, Fun Home, and King and I? Umm... I'm very interested to hear how you judge shows.
I thoroughly enjoyed Big Fish too. I still don't understand why that didn't last longer than it did...but that's another issue entirely.

thanks so much for your brief reviews
would love to hear more detail
1) how in the world did you get tix for hamilton?
2)what specifically did you love so much about finding neverland?
3) what was sparse about king and I
4) what did you love about american in paris and on the town? (assuming you love dance oriented musicals)
I also loved big fish, thought norberts acting job was tony worthy, and really like you felt deep emotions and empathy for the characters
something that I think does not happen in many critically aclaimed shows where people are in love with the subject matter or message
I do agree that Fun Home is going to be a hard sell to the tourist trade -- but that's not always the reason to put a show up.
I will say this: based on the audience when I went two weeks ago, it's going to do WONDERS with lesbians. It was incredibly obvious (yes, in very stereotypical ways) that the house was loaded with lesbians. I can understand why, after all, Bechdel has quite a following and let's face it: there aren't too many lesbian stories or characters "out there" getting attention. (And as a side note: I never felt prettier or more feminine in my life!)
Personally, I'm counting the days until I get to bring my teenage daughter see this. 9 more days, in case you were interested. I hope she loves it as much as did I.
