Ria Jones did the first Sydmonton "preview" so to speak...there is footage out there somewhere on YouTube. I loved seeing this footage!

I didn't realize there was an earlier one. It's been a while since I've read it, but I think the coffee table/companion book only ever mentioned the presentation with LuPone.

I saw Patti in the original London production back in the day. Christ, her voice was phenomenal back then. I have since seen her in Gypsy (twice) and recently in War Paint. I have also seen her in two different London concerts. Her voice is still in good shape, but the sheer vocal power in Sunset (not really given its justice in any clip I've seen) was stunning and unlike anything I've ever heard. In the final reprise of With One Look at the very end of the show (which they eventually worked in to the LuPone version) she did this amazing vocal riff on the 'Meeeeee' - it was like she climbed somehow on the note. Can't describe it musically, but it was amazing and the most vocally-powerful and intense thing I've heard. This was towards the end of her run in the production. The final performance clip on YT is actually disappointing in comparison- she cuts the note short. On the day I went, however, she sustained the note both times and did this riff described above. A certain Seth Rudetsky would have loved that performance.

I haven't seen Patti in concert in many years. Does anyone know if she ever sings either of Norma's big songs? I'm guessing not.

She sang "With One Look" in the original key in her 2013 London concert.
If I am not wrong, Meryl Streep was in the audience of the Sydmonton workshop, since at the time she had her eyes on the role.

Yes, she did sing With One Look at her 2013 concerts. I was actually at the concert that's on YT. She did sing it in the original key, but it was not as powerful/resonant as in the production (maybe the production's original sound design gave more amplification). Still glad she sang it though.

Yes - and it was rumored that after seeing LuPone's performance, she was quoted as saying "she'll do the part on stage, but I'll play her in the movie version" - would love to know if this was actually said by her, or just someone make things up.
