1993 London Cast Recording of Carousel

I was looking for a good recording of Carousel on Spotify and wanted to listen to the 1994 Broadway revival because of that production's legendary reputation. It's not there, but the London production is. I'm obsessed with this recording right now. Good holy Jesus is it beautiful. I think there are people who could sing it better, but there's something about how the voices of Billy and Julie are earthier and a little rough around the edges that fascinates me and fits the characters and story. And the orchestrations! This recording feels pretty definitive to me. Don't know that I need to listen to any other. Thoughts on how this one compares to others, especially the '94 Broadway revival?

They aren't profoundly different recordings, but the Broadway Cast Recording has the benefit of having Audra McDonald and Shirley Verrett. It's a pity that by the time the London Revival was recorded Janie Dee and Patricia Routledge had already left the cast, since they were pretty special. I'd take Clive Rowe over Eddie Korbich any day as Mr Snow, and while Sally Murphy is a better singer Joanna Riding is just heartbreaking as Julie. Billy is the same. But yeah you must check out Audra's "Mr Snow" and Shirley's "You'll Never Walk Alone" from the Broadway revival cast recording

The 1993 London cast recording was what introduced me to this show, and it remains my favourite cast recording too. Out of the other recordings with which I'm familiar, the film soundtrack has some interesting variant versions of the instrumental sections of the score (for example, June is Bustin' Out All Over Ballet, and Louise's Ballet). I think this is the most expanded version of the soundtrack: https://open.spotify.com/album/4y6iem6LEyPbAAQVStVGbh?si=tlA94NylR5ug497f4EaZIg.

Curious to know from anyone who saw the 1994 version: Was The Highest Judge of All cut from the show, or was it just not included on the recording? I ask because you can hear a couple of bars from it instrumentally during the finale.

It is not listed in archived Playbill that’s on Playbillvault.com, so I assume it was indeed cut.

I like a Billy with a rougher, odder voice: Michael Hayden and Mandy Patinkin are the ones I play the most often.
