No Brainer. Phantom all the way.
if you want to enjoy good ol' American Theatre then Phantom, if you want to relax and take the stress of the world off you and have some GRAND laughs then Spamalot
They both suck!
good point pab!
well, phantom i feel is overrated. so is spamalot, but I had a alot of fun there.
i don't know. totally up to you.
Phantom...i think it'll leave more of an impression. just my view...
Phantom, much better then Spamalot. David Hyde Pierce will be gone when you'd see Spamalot and he'd be the only reason I would consider Spamalot.

Between those two choices, Phantom.
It's a classic choice and the type of show that's stereotypically Broadway. Big, sweeping score and all.
Spamalot was entertaining, but just isn't the same type of show. It's funny, but didn't stick with me once I left the theatre.
Phantom was what turned me into a theater fan. Period.
Phantom of the Opera was my first show on Broadway and I remember thinking "I could do this every night of my life and I'd be perfectly okay with that."
It's a truly magical experience.

hmm...well there both completely different. So I guess if you wanna see a drama go for Phantom but if you want a comedy then see spamalot. It all depends on what your taste is.
I've seen both, and am a HUGE Spamalot fan (I've seen it 5 times, and I live 300+ miles away from NYC) That said, I recommend Phantom for your first show---it is such a spectacle!
Between the two, PHANTOM.

Thanks, guys ... I appreciate all the suggestions!
Check out the soundtracks first.
I would personally choose Phantom.
We took our daughter to see her first broadway show 2 years ago. I wanted it to be a magical experience for her, and it was.
We chose Phantom.

Phantom was really incredible. The songs itself may be a little dry to some, but you can't beat the special effects!

PHANTOM definitely, used to be my favorite show of all time, and really is quite amazing
if you're going with a school group, though, they may enjoy SPAMALOT better
have fun anyways!
Phantom!!!
I would chose Phantom if you'd want a experince you'll remember forever. Phantom is really a great show. I would totally chose Phantom!
I have not seen Phantom, but I have seen Spamalot twice, and i laughed both times. Definitely go to Spamalot.
why would you bring this thread back from over a month ago???

While it's not a bad choice for a first show (neither is Spamalot), it's hardly good ol' American Theatre any more than Les Miz, Miss Saigon or Cats were
I would say Phantom of the Opera because you are going on a choir trip and it is for the most part sung. That is what my choir did when we went to NY for competition, but we also saw 42nd Street.
Freshman would have a ball at Spamalot & not enjoy Phantom of the Opera as much, unless you were an operaic school.
