of course SPRING AWAKENING dominated, with Jonathan Groff almost tying with Raul Esparza for Leading Actor in a Musical...sheesh. And SPRING AWAKENING for Best Book?
anyways, not too much new there.
No surprises.
The fans stink. Spring Awakening for best book? Come on!

Go Team Company!
As Brian F. O'Byrne (Herzen) would say, "What is wrong with this picture?"
No, there are no surprises, but that's because most of these predictions are in line with those of major critics and/or they deserve it. I would imagine these are how the Tony's will play out with the exception of perhaps Lead Actress in a Play and Best Book of a Musical. Why the backlash with comments like the fans stink? The fans are actually right on target with the rest of the industry. Even if Steven Sater loses Book, I betcha it will be extremely close, for reasons I've already articulated in previous posts.

Hey, we came in 6th Off-Broadway!
That's something. Right?

The fans are right on target with the rest of the industry? First of all, things like this aren't GREAT predictors because the fans are voting, and in many cases don't think the same way as industry people do. That's a gross generalization; you're choosing to ignore the vast group of fans who have tendencies to be delusional, to say the least. If fans are right on target with the rest of the industry, why are these huge groups of idiot fans for shows that don't deserve the kind of attention they get? Why do shows that are nothing but mindless fluff get such great followings? And, besides, it depends what part of the industry you're even talking about; it's a ridiculous comment. Thinking some overrated show (come on, there's one every season) deserves every single award it's up for is not being in line with the rest of the industry. Why the backlash to fans with these awards? Because they are the ones who voted. People certainly have the right to think that blindly adoring fans just cast their votes for silly reasons. I'm sure it happened. And Sater had better not win for book. Ugh. I wish that people who love Spring Awakening could do so and still recognize that there's quite a bit wrong with the show.

Industry people definitely have a different perspective than the rest of us. And most fan choice voters havent seen all the nominated shows, either. Then again, lots of Tony voters dont either, but thats another story..
LuvtheEmcee, you completely mis-read my comment. Have knee-jerk reactions much? I wasn't saying that the opinions of ANY group of fans would be in line with those of the industry. That would be a ridiculous statement. I was saying that the results of the Broadwayworld 2007 Theatre Fans' Choice Awards mirror the predictions made by many theatre insiders, critics, and members of the press. You're right, I should probably have detailed which members of the industry I was referring to, however, Spring Awakening is referred to all the time in periodicals such as Variety as the "industry " fav, so I thought it was clear.

I agree. SPRING AWAKENING for Best book? For "No Book" maybe...The depressing scenes are laughable. Actually, we did laugh.
Why the backlash with comments like the fans stink? The fans are actually right on target with the rest of the industry.
I read that as a generalization; I'm sorry for misinterpreting you. Spring Awakening probably IS the favorite to win, and is clearly the fan favorite, but yes, it would be a ridiculous statement to say that the fans are in line with the industry. That's why I reacted that way.
Raul had a 7000 vote lead over Jon Groff; how is that "almost tying"? The difference between Bush and Gore was closer and that was out of millions of votes.
"I wish that people who love Spring Awakening could do so and still recognize that there's quite a bit wrong with the show."
There are many fans, like myself, who do not think that Spring Awakening deserves to win everything. For example I don't think it should win Best Book or Best Director. Making a generalization that ALL people who love Spring Awakening do not do that is stupid.
I'm a big SA fan, but I think Grey Gardens deserves best book.
And I wish more of you were like that. I didn't say everyone -- I was implying that there was a certain group to which it applies.
I misread your comment. Sorry for snapping at you.
