re: '9 To 5' On Its Way To Making A Living

Its a lot of fun and i think the critics have been to harsh on this show, you cant not have a good night.

I did predict that the reviews would be mediocre, i had a feeling that they would not fall for its charms after shows like Billy and Next To Normal opening.

I think it will have a healthy run and they have some pull qoutes from some of them reviews so they should be fine. However i think it will alk away from the Tonys pretty empty handed, it may get set design (i cant understand how some of the critics bashed the set, its brilliant)

I think Janney will get a nomination as well.

And thats what's so wrong about New York theatre and its audiences -in that one sentence you just posted

re: '9 To 5' On Its Way To Making A Living

Totally agreed with above.

I have seen New York Times give a negative review and decent review in the New York Post and close, example of this is A Catered Affair and Woman in White.

re: '9 To 5' On Its Way To Making A Living

The Times and the Post nearly always do oppisite reviews to each other, its quite funny

re: '9 To 5' On Its Way To Making A Living

Just posted a reply in the 9-5 Review thread on the main Broadway board - I honestly can't believe the amount of negativity I've read about this show in the past week on ATC and from some posters on BWW. I saw it twice when I was over in New York last month and will definitely see it again later in the year (hopefully!), even if I have enjoyed other shows more...(N2N, Priscilla).

TBH, some of the reactions to 9-5 have me baffled. I'm not a novice theatre-goer (though I bow to the superior knowledge of many on here, not being as immersed in all things theatre as many of youre: '9 To 5' On Its Way To Making A Living But for me 9-5 does exactly what it says on the tin: it entertains! It has 3 very strong leads, some catchy tunes and a story people can identify with even if they haven't seen the movie. And if it draws traditional non-theatre-goers into a Broadway show and maybe wins a few of them over as converts, then more power to it!

Just ignore them over there and prepare your self to be bashed when you go back to see the replies.
That board needs to be monitored for internet bullying, seriously.
Can't wait to see it again next Saturday, can't wait.
Looking forward to seeing the changes from when I saw it in LA but just generally looking forward to a fun night at the theatre.

Totally agree with your comment on internet bullying Mama - I often read some of the stuff posted over there with my mouth hanging open.

VERY envious of you getting to go back next week! Especially because I might have got to go to the Opening Nights of both 9 to 5 AND Accent on Youth if I'd had a bit more werewithal (sp?).

I went to the opening and closing perfs of Curtains and had two AMAZING experiences - ones I definitely want to repeat at other shows in the future. Hope you have a great time in NYC. :)

Its def one of the best screen to stage adaptations

I think the critics seem to be more annoyed thats its exactly the same as the film, i however dont think thats a bad thing.
I do agree that Dollys score is a bit of a let down, though does have some great moments in.

re: '9 To 5' On Its Way To Making A Living

lol i hate Fame (i just happened to be in it for a long time lol)

I just think 9 to 5 has some problems but mainly it works so well. The 3 women are on fire, thats enough to get excited about this show. The set was breathtaking and the humor really works.

Get Out and Stay Out was jaw dropping and the opening to the show was so exciting just hearing that song come to life.

The book is strong (much stronger than most of them) and i for one really liked the choreography, it was very retro (i think the critics missed the point of that big time)

So why have the critics been so harsh....i think that there not letting off anyone involved for it not being perfect because the people behing it are so damn talented.

What annoys me is the NY times raved about shows like Mamma Mia and then make out like this one is empty etc

I agree with Mamma though that the critics cant touch this one, it will do well i think. I think the days when a Times review could kill a show are long gone.

Agreed! I hope to be back in NYC in November and 9-5 is top of my list of must-see-again shows.

Meant to post this earlier: THANK YOU to song&danceman for posting all these reviews. Enjoyed getting a chance to read them in full, even if I disagreed with large parts of them. re: '9 To 5' On Its Way To Making A Living

I was disappointed with the reviews too, just as I was with the Priscilla ones last month. I get the impression the New York critics have more sway than their West End counterparts (and I also think Priscilla is more of a surefire word-of-mouth hit in London than 9-5 is on Broadway). Then again, I was also disheartened by some of the reviews for Spamalot and Curtains, and they did OK-ish!

It will be VERY interesting to see what the reactions are if 9-5 comes to London and Priscilla makes a well-deserved transfer to Broadway... :)

I think Spamalot got a good write up?

Curtains had the most brilliant seen I have witnessed in theatre to take you into the interval, anyone remember it?

You have to agree that it isn't that difficult to pick out some great quotes from 75% of those reviews.

re: '9 To 5' On Its Way To Making A Living

I still think you need the stamp of approval from the New York Times, big shame America is more media led than the UK, look at shows like The Pirate Queen, Cry Baby, A Tale of Two Cities.

I say again it is very rare for shows to be critic proof from the New York Times, there are shows on Broadway that have proved to be the exception, such as Wicked. Mary Poppins and The Little Mermaid are going in that direction.

re: '9 To 5' On Its Way To Making A Living

See I don't think that the NY Times is as powerful as it once was in terms of reviews. There have been a few different times where the Times gave a show a bad review and yet it went on to become a hit. Take a look at Wicked. Wicked wasn't given the best review by the Times and look at it now. I guess the point that I am trying to make is that the TImes doesn't have as much power as it once did.

Hell taking a look at this season with Next To Normal, Ben Brantly pretty much wrote a love letter to the show and people were wondering about the fate of the show due to the fact that it got rave reviews and yet wasn't doing much in terms of ticket sales. Of course being nominated for a few Tonys changed that but still.
