'9 To 5' On Its Way To Making A Living

The first preview on Broadway is this evening (Tue).
I'm sure a few of the wrinkles in this stunning high-tec show have been sorted since a very successful L.A run and these three girls will have a great run in New York.

'Good Luck Ladies'

'9 To 5' On Its Way To Making A Living
Maybe they would like to send some of their workload, Xerox machine and all, to London -soon!!!
Please!

One has thankfully planned their New York trip to co-incide with the first preview of what will most likely be the Hairspray of the next few years - only with a better set and cast.

I shall report back tonight on how the show is, and how it compares with LA (which I've seen via the internet) :)

Chookas to Steph, Megan, Allison, Marc and the rest of this amazing cast ... and also the head of automation at the Marquis - he'll need all the luck in the world with this show :)

..and playing second fiddle, we'll be seeing it next Tuesday (as long as we don't suffer the flight delays and stuff which boyfromoz did)

I've got a feeling that if the show is half as good as I think it will be, I'll be returning sometime in the next two weeks :)

Good luck with your flights tap :)

For the love of god, bring this to London.... and with Stephanie J Block, Ive downloaded "Get Out and Stay Out" from the show, sung by Block, and it's one of the best songs I've EVER heard from a musical!

re: '9 To 5' On Its Way To Making A Living

I've been preaching the wonders of this song to EVERYONE, download it and give it a listen.... it is INCREDIBLE

NOTE TO MODS: This is a legal, free download from the 9 to 5 website, therefore by sharing the link, I am not breaking ANY laws!

Out of interest, 5 songs are availble, but only one from the website, does anyone have any other songs from the 9 to 5 studio recording?

I have a dvd of this from LA and it is so much fun though i have to say it has some book issues, however the show is just one big smile fest it doesn't matter.

Reading the 1st preview reviews from NY i think the changes they have made to the show since LA are sensible, im glad Mundania has been cut and the 2nd song from LA (cant remember what it was called) has been replaced too.
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna

Here's my review (slightly edited) from the Broadway Board:

Ok...so I just got back after a manic stage door and a show that can only be described as "divine". This is a show that could bring a smile to Ebenezer Scrooge's face...heck even Ben Brantley could not hate this show.

The cast were all completely at the top of their game. Allison Janney proves she has a dazzle dazzle Broadway diva just waiting to burst out. "One of the Boys" was definitely a highlight of the show. Megan Hilty was her usual sassy self. "Backwoods Barbie" is a great song that may well become her signature. However, for me Steph J Block was the star of the show. She sang like an angel, looked simply fierce (in a good way) and was a knockout. "Get Out and Stay Out" was PHENOMENAL!! She got two mid-song rounds of applause and at the end of the song, the audience went wild. Kathy Fitzgerald was HILARIOUS! "5 to 9" remains ... thankfully, and she totally deserves a Tony nom for her performance. For me Mark Kudisch was a minor weak link in an incredibly strong chain. That's probably due to him having the only dud song in the score "Always a Woman" which replaced "Mundania". I cannot really remember much from "Always A Woman" except for the title phrase repeated every second sentence plus some probably funny one-liners which were drowned out by the male ensemble doing their best gospel choir impersonation (complete with spirit fingers and robes).

William Ivey Long has done his best work to date on this show. Judy's blue sequin dress in the Dream Sequence (her section is now titled "The Dance of Death") is now longer and more sassy than before. Another costume highlight was Ann Harada's pant suit - which makes a brief but very welcome appearance late in the second act. Scott Pask is a genius. To see the office set (complete with desks, trash cans, a water cooler and indoor plant) plus walls and ceiling lights come together in about 10 seconds was one of those few moments where a set can steal an audience's attention. The projection designer of "Guys and Dolls" down at the Nederlander need to take a lead out of Peggi Eisenhauer and Peter Nigrini's book. Their imagery was spot on-not too distracting, yet essential to the rest of the set design.

Dolly Parton has written some great numbers for this show, including the aforementioned "Get Out and Stay Out", "One of the Boys", and "Backwoods Barbie". Other highlights were the opening number, "Change It" which replaces another song I can't quite remember near the top of the second act, and the beautiful "Shine Like the Sun", which has an unintentional nod to Steph J Block's time in Wicked.

All in all, this show deserves a long and healthy run. It has all the right ingredients - a great and very capable creative team matched with a top shelf cast. All it needs now is a little trimming (mostly directed towards both of Hart's numbers) and it is a sure fire hit. Look out Broadway, these gals will be clocking in for many years to come.

On a side note, I will be returning to this show on Sunday and also Wednesday of next week - its totally worth watiing in line all day for rush seats :)

This will be in London within the next 18 months!
I said this last October when I saw it in LA and it looks like its winning over New York in just 3 days!

Are "Get Out..." and "Shine..." the only songs they've had up for download?

The CD of this production is gonna go crazy.
Its Score is so much fun that not just Dolly fans will by it but the curious theatre goers too.

re: '9 To 5' On Its Way To Making A Living

For the benefit of you who have seen the LA production (whether via DVD or at the theatre) yet not the NYC production, here are two of the new songs put into the show for Broadway:
1. Replacing the Judy-breaks-the-photocopier song ("Out of Control") as well as the main-three-singing-about-their-loves ("The One I Love") is one song called "I Just Might": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVT1PN8MLPM
2. Replacing Doralee's I'll-inspire-you-all-to-work-better song ("Well Oiled Machine) is a song called "Change It": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q97cGo5sCDo - notice Megan's new second act wig
