"Best Musical, no way."
Have you seen 9 to 5? It's superior to Billy Elliot in every way, in my opinion.

For those of you who saw it, what were your favorite songs or thoughts on possible cuts/edits?
The only possible cuts I can fathom are "Tattletale," "5 to 9", "Heart to Hart" and "Well Oiled-Machine." None of them are crucial, plot-wise, but "Tattletale" I fear will be the first to go... a big complaint was with Act One's length, and "Tattletale" is really the only song that can logically go.

Light in the Piazza was superior to Spamalot. Caroline, or Change was superior to Avenue Q.
Tony votes are far more political than that.

:) Oh absolutely. So, given the mediocre buzz Billy Elliot has been getting (and the fact that 9 to 5 will tour WORLDS better), why on earth are you so confident?
I agree that 9 to 5 will have a better campaign too. They've got the extra dough!

"IN what world is Billy Elliot getting mediocre buzz?"
Many, MANY people are not as blown away as they expected to be. That's the miracle of low expectations. All 9 to 5 is promising is a fun, carefree, and entertaining night, and it MORE than delivers. Billy Elliot promises a life-changing theatrical experience. Many are not having that, and are disappointed. Always better to pleasantly surprise them than make 'em wonder what they missed!

That may be true, but the Average Joe doesn't vote for the Tony Awards. It's not the People's Choice Awards. Bily Elliot has years of London buzz behind it. Rave reviews from all major publications. And despite your gross generalization, generally good word of mouth. The grosses speak for themselves.
I, for the record, am not a huge fan of Billy Elliot. I find the score deeply flawed. But my opinions on the show aren't going to make Billy Elliot lose.
I think you're confusing your love of 9 to 5, which you have every right to have, with the reality of the way the Tony Awards work.
I wish 9 to 5 all the success in the world. But it isn't going to win Best Musical. And it has nothing to do with the quality of either show.

:) Well, I respect your opinion, but anxiously await your being proved wrong!

Posted: 1/20/09 at 12:50amlets remember something re: the best musical tony. The bulk of tony voters are people who run tour theaters. Their priority is shows that will tour nicely and make them money when they come to town. Lets face it 9 to 5 will sell WAY better in middle america than Billy Elliot.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 2:07amWord, Jonart. Imagine the sell-out crowds 9 to 5 will bring down in the South? My friend lives in Tennessee, and the excitement over the show even EXISTING is huge. When it eventually makes it's way down there, there won't be an empty seat in the house.

Those pictures are great!!! It looks like Megan is wearing the same coat that Dolly wore in the movie during the hospital scene!!!!
Do you think any songs will be changed before it gets back to Broadway. Some of the songs I have heard so far are awesome!!!!

Posted: 1/20/09 at 12:38pmI can't wait for this Production. I personally liked Billy Elliot but was not where as thrilled as some other people. I thought the book was good, nothing too special. The score was good, not as good as it should be. The sets were petty mediocre, boring. Haydn Gwynne's costumes were great but the rest was nothing special. This production is overrated in my opinion and other shows should be recognized.
