9 to 5 Cast Recording?

Posted: 1/19/09 at 4:08pmDoes anyone know if there has been word about a cast recording for 9 to 5? And if they decide to record, is it usually during previews or after opening night?

In the current economy, if there is a recording, I'm sure the producers will wait until after opening to see if the reviews and advance will justify the cost of going into the studio. Given Parton's involvement and the kudos given to her score in the tryout reviews, I would imagine it will happen, but it may take some time.
Or I could be entirely wrong.

Per a source at Dolly's production office -- yes, an Original Broadway Cast Recording of 9 TO 5: The Musical will be recorded. It is expected to be recorded shortly after the Broadway opening.

Posted: 1/19/09 at 6:33pmI would bet that Dolly would pay out of pocket to get it made.

"I wish the recording would be recorded during previews like Hairspray's was."
ahh but that decision resulted in several lyric and dialogue changes between the cast recording and the actual show

I think this definitely get recorded, people I know who have heard the music says it is fantastic.
9-5 will be the Broadway smash of the year.
Priscilla will be the London smash.

Broadway.com is ridiculous.
And, I agree, I think 9 TO 5 is going to surprise a lot of people and be a huge success, possibly bigger than BILLY ELLIOT. Which could give it a push come Tony time...plus it will be fresh in the voters' minds.

Posted: 1/19/09 at 7:25pmWhile Parton is a critics darling, I highly doubt even she'll be able to stop Billy Elliot.

Really? It would SHOCK me if she wasn't given Best Score over BE, having seen the show in L.A. :) Most people obviously haven't seen 9 to 5 yet, so it's hard for them to accurately judge or compare, but the show is fantastic. It's going to surprise a lot of people. The technical elements are all outstanding, the choreo is phenomenal, and the music is nothing short of brilliant...I wouldn't write Billy's name on any statues just yet!

Best Score, sure. Best Musical, no way.
I would absolutely agree. 9 TO 5 has an incredibly infectious and memorable score, and having seen the show four times in Los Angeles, I think it can absolutely pull off Best Score and Best Book, yet not take the whole cake.

We will have to wait for previews to see any changes made from the L.A. tryout that might strengthen (or hurt) 9 to 5's case on the critical level. Reviews noted that work needed to be done but were very positive on the whole.
I think it will be a great commercial success because of the cast, Dolly's name and music, and it is a feel-good escape from these tough times, which even in a poor economy people will pay to see to lift their spirits. I think it will carry much more excitement among the public and receive loads more news coverage, so it may be bigger than BE in that sense. As much as I would like to I haven't seen BE so I can't comment on it's merits or flaws. I just don't think it's written in stone yet.
As for these changes and a cast recording, I will be very sad if they cut "The One I Love." It's so beautiful, and someone posted elsewhere that it would be like cutting the heart from the show. I hope they cut "I killed the boss" instead. I also love "Well-Oiled Machine" although some were indifferent about it. "Mundania" didn't bother me, but many thought it had to go. I would be interested to hear whatever changes they make though. Hopefully it will be for the better.
For those of you who saw it, what were your favorite songs or thoughts on possible cuts/edits?

I would sure hope so. I want to hear all of these songs. I don't think they would add or remove any songs. I heard they were good. I would also see Dolly Parton adding bonus tracks if there was room.

"Best Musical, no way."
Have you seen 9 to 5? It's superior to Billy Elliot in every way, in my opinion.
