There is nothing illegal about selling a trashed item on eBay. It wasn't stolen. They released any legal ownership when they threw it away.
However, if it were actually worth something, don't you think they would have sold it themselves? They must know that these giant marquee ads don't sell well at all. They're too big to display anywhere.
It's the same thing with six-sheet posters for movies. (Six times the size of the normal one-sheet posters.) Bigger isn't better. They sell for much less, if at all, compared to the standard one-sheets.
I somehow ended up with an old wig from CATS.
I didn't pay a dime for it, but I sold it on eBay and made over $300.00.
It's not wrong that she's selling it, it's wrong that she's advertising it here on BWW.
I would understand if she had contributed more to the boards, but all I see are a handful of single sentence posts?
"There was a woman who found a modern art masterpiece thrown out in the trash recently , it ended up being worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Would you consider her a douche for selling it to a collector or museum?"
Well, hopefully the woman wasn't selling it on eBay with a 0 rating. Again, I know we all start somewhere, but I would buy with caution, especially since the poster is attempting to sell such a large item at the price listed.
I would advise others to think carefully before they buy, even if they do see worth in this item. There is no picture of the item after it was taken down, so we don't know for sure if the poster even has the marquee.
I really think it is more about the sketchy person who mostly comes on here to shill their wares, has a sketchy ebay profile with no item photos and comes into our online community to hawk stuff. Plus, in reality, I agree completely with Millie-theatre fans are very into collectibles and could be easily exploited-especially for collectibles from flopped shows. So bid cautiously. Personally, I do think it is tacky to sell something that was given to you, clearly a lot of you do not. Actually, I dont' believe it was given to the seller. I am sure it was stolen from a dumpster. From talking to my friends, they had to stalk theatres after closing to get such wares as workmen were adamant that the pieces could not be taken, they were to be discarded.
I believe if an item is discarded the there is nothing wrong with someone retrieving it legally. If the producers didn't want it to be taken they would have had it destroyed first.
The thing is, Diva, if you came here and posted "I obtained a wig from Cats that I'm looking to sell" I wouldn't have batted an eye. You're a major contributor to the board where this person is not. And, if she had posted saying "I'm trying to sell this" rather than just posting nothing I don't think I'd have minded so much. We're not a bunch of fools and I think everyone here would have appreciated the honesty. The way the post is set up one would think the OP found the link and is sharing it with us.
As I said if they were just looking to cover shipping costs then fine. But that's way more than what it would cost to ship. If I could remember my eBay password I'd ask if the seller has obtained some sort of estimate in writing as to what it would cost to ship. I paid about $100 to ship a wooden marquee that could not be folded. This item is vinyl and can be folded. How is it so much more?

I never say he was doing anything wrong. I said he was tacky, which stand by. In light of the fact that he already tried to unload another marquee he couldn't sell, this he just comes off as sort of smarmy and tacky. No link, no message, etc.
I just wonder what this is actually worth (100 bucks tops, maybe) and if the poster would have gone through the trouble if he wasn't something he'd get AT LEAST three hundred bucks for.

Those pieces are supposed to be destroyed unless they "fall" into the hands of a theatre collector who will cherish the piece in their private collection. Those pieces are not produced to be sold. That is terrible."
That's very sweet. I didn't know you could get WiFi on a shortbus.
I hate Narcs.
Amoni, if it was supposed to be destroyed, they wouldn't leave it out in the open for people to take.
I do not know where the original poster obtained this marquee from or even if he/she obtained the marquee. Anyways, if the poster even had issues with the Sweeney Todd marquee, why did he/she pick up the 9 to 5 marquee?
By the way, where the heck is the original poster? I want to see what he or she has to say.
^ That was a quote from someone else.
There are additional photos on the ebay listing now. Upon seeing the photos I can say, without a doubt, that it wouldn't cost $300 to ship. The seller is answering questions on the ebay page so if any of you want to get your questions out there feel free to post them there.
Really? Y'all need to find better ways to fill your time. Who cares about this?

To all of you saying "who cares about this" (roadmixer and BwayBuff2), why the heck are you even posting in the thread then? If we need to find better ways to fill our time, you do as well!

Just looked at the other pics posted - it seems to me that it should have been rolled for storage, not folded.
The person on eBay is an idiot and spelled "marquee" as "marquis." I just hope people read carefully and realize they are NOT buying the Marquis Theater (or the entire Marquis Theater black sign), which is what is posted above the sign.

it's terribly wrinkled now!! I don't think I'd want to pay $300 for it.
