A Chorus Line Movie

Posted: 10/15/06 at 10:20pmI actually saw it at a regional Equity Theatre in Akron. It was good don't get me wrong ... but I thought the movie was a bit better.

For people who haven't seen the stage version, it's a pretty good movie.
I saw the movie before I had seen the show live, and I loved it. Then, I saw a local production of the show and realized how terrible the movie was. So for an average person who doesn't have much interest in theatre, they might actually find the movie good.

Posted: 10/16/06 at 12:39amI have friends who do not care for Broadway and one of the few musicals they like is the "A Chorus Line" film. I believe it has cult film status.

Before I ever saw the stage version, I thought the film was awful.
My sister has never seen the show, but watched it with me recently. Even she thought it was awful.

Posted: 10/16/06 at 11:23amAfter seeing the stage version, I didn't think the film was AS bad as people made it out to be. I do feel, however, that there were many unecessary cuts (and "Let Me Dance for You' is horrendous). The real issue though, is A Chorus Line just isn't adaptable to film. Perhaps if they did as a faux documentary it could work.

Posted: 10/16/06 at 1:07pmI have never seen the stage show (plan on seeing this revival, though) and I hated the movie. I never even made it all the way through it was so bad. It's not even "oh I thought it was good until I saw the show" thing. I just thought it was an awful movie. Which is sad.

Posted: 10/16/06 at 1:42pmWhen I first saw it I thought it was boring. However, the more familiar I became with the film and the original cast recording, the more I wondered why songs were cut. I just don't think it's compelling enough for a movie. Though I still think it MIGHT work done as a faux documentary.

Re-watching the movie again it's kind of a nightmare of bad 80's fashion and haircuts but there is something I find kind of interesting about the whole affair (I wonder if Sharon Brown looks back at that horrid cut she had and grimaces)
A few things:
How can anyone not have mentioned how they changed At The Ballet? I love that last chorus where all three women sing "Up the steep..." and Maggie gets that small note change...but they took it out in the movie. Horrid.
Vicki Frederick is a great Sheila.
I actually liked some of the dancing in the movie. The women for sure had legs that went on forever.
Yamil Borges...I wonder if she still has that Staying Alive headband. Isn't she a pretty famous musical star in Germany now?
Can you believe they asked DeLee Lively to dub Audrey Landers dancing after not giving her the part to begin with?
I tried watching the movie again to look for the person that falls in the finale...can someone tell me where that happens?

I thought I was the only one who didn't spot that. I've re-watched that part over and over and has never seen anyone fall.

Yes, Vicki is a great Sheila. She was one of the few bright points in the movie.
And yes, the movie definitely does have cult status.
I;ve never seen someone fall in the finale. If you keep your eye on Vicki Frederick, she does fall out of step and falter a bit. She doesn't fall though.

I had no idea about that story about DeLee Lively. I saw her as Val on Broadway, and she was great.
I have not seen the movie since it first came out. I remember being disappointed by it then. But, ugh, that horrendous hair "don't" on Alyson Reed is burned into my memory forever!
