I watched it a couple weeks ago after having not seen it for years. I was like "Well, it can't be THAT bad."
10 minutes into it I was like "Ah! Stop! Stop! Stop!"
The movie really isn't all that bad. I think the actors did all they could with what they were given. It could have been a lot worse.
How could it have been worse?
They could have been dancing to Earth Wind & Fire music.
Or Cyndi Lauper music?
Maybe they could have made it about beauty school? Cassie is a beauty student who accidentally cut someone's ear of, so she has to start again from the top (A FIVE SIX SEVEN EIGHT!).

I thought it was good, until I saw the show.
Now I realize how AWFUL it is.
I don't blame the actors for the movie being bad though -- it's the director and the choices in cuts/framing.
1)Why cut Hello Twelve...it's the best part of the whole show and they cut it.
2)"Surprise" is a stupid song to replace it.
3)"What I Did For Love" -- NOT about romantic love.
4) "Let Me Dance For You" isn't THAT bad, but it's not as good as "The Music and the Mirror."
5) They cut "Sing"
6) And the worst offense - who the hell films a musical about dancing from the waist up rather than full body shots???

a director who has never filmed a musical, expecially one with 'dance' numbers.
Also, Sir Richard Attenborough had NO clue as to what A CHORUS LINE was really about. He thought it was about a group of dancers who want to be in a Broadway show REALLY bad. The whole Michael Bennett concept of the 'audition' went totally over his head, so this reflects the tone of the film. If you watch it with Sir Attenborough's concept, it makes sense -- but that's not what A CHORUS LINE is and was about.
As for the song cuts/changes, don't blame him -- those were the writer's choices, basically. Same as for Cassie's infamous asymetrical 80's cut. That was NOT Alyson Reed's choice (her being a natural blonde with straight hair). That was just another example of the creative team TRYING to contemporize the story to the 80's (just look at those leotards AND leg warmers!).
What's tragic is that Michael Bennett was still alive and kicking when this film was done.
The movie had ALOT of changes. I like the show WAY better.

I think the film is the reason Michael Bennet died: He didn't want to be seen in public after attenborough's tragically awful film of his own play!
I really enjoy this movie. I find it really fun & enjoyable.
Why do people hate it so much?
I think the #1 worst thing about the movie (besides the fact that they completely lost the essence of ACL) is the arrangements! I wanted to kill myself watching Music and the Mirror...
There is no "Music/Mirror" in the film.
Yes, the arrangements and orchestrations are laughable. The faux-80's drum beats every 4 seconds are a personal favorite.

Do you think there would be a way to make a Chorus Line movie that was actually good? It seems so theatrical...

There may be a way. I'm no film director, so I can't give examples, but the movie of ACL might have fared better with a reimagining for the screen, much like the film version of Hedwig. The stage version of Hedwig is totally theatrical, and the film is so different from the stage version, but so true to the material at the same time.
I was refering to the "Weeeee madee a lot of music together" or whatever the hell she says bit. It's their "take" on it.

The movie really is bad.
It's so bad it makes Mr Roxy look good.
You wanna know something sad ... I actually think the movie is better than the stage version I saw.

That is actually very sad.
Where did you see the stage version?
