re: A Doll's Life

I saw it in LA too and, yes, it certainly had problems. Prince was there the night I saw it and I eavesdropped on him at intermission. He was telling some people it was a total loss of (I believe) $400,000 but the backers wanted and deserved a NY opening. He left town soon after.

"George Hearn was an empty stentorian noise."

Great line. I love George in almost everything but I have trouble listening to him on the album. And isn't one of the lyrics something like, "Worse than being on your own/Is to mate and feel alone"? Oy! I don't think Comden and Green were the right people to do this show.

re: A Doll's Life

I recently bought the cast recording of "A Doll's Life" and I must say that after listening to it a few times, I really love the score. "Letter to the Children," "Stay With Me Nora," "Learn to be Lonely," "No More Mornings," "There She Is," and "Power" are all great.

magruder mentioned that there doesn't seem to be a sizeable cult for a concert version of "A Doll's Life," but I would *love* to see this done at Encores. Is there a sizeable cult for "70, Girls, 70?"

I am truly sorry that I was only seven months old when this came to Broadway. I think I would have enjoyed it.

re: A Doll's Life

I saw Audra do "learn to be lonely" at a concert in DC a few years back. I was so struck by the song, I managed to find a cast recording on ebay and bought it. I was sorely disappointed with the rest of the score and story line, but Audra did a beautiful interpretation of the song. would love to see her record it.

Audra *should* record it. That would be fantastic!

re: A Doll's Life

I hate the play. I don't know why, but I do.

Also, it's Norway, it's supposed to be dark!

And they tried explaining what happens after Nora leaves?

Right alone, I don't care how good the music was/is...that ruins it.

Of its time, A DOLL'S HOUSE had the second best sound effect you were likely to hear. The door slamming. If done wrong, it sounded like she was shooting herself. Good stuff.

Perhaps Audra could do play Nora for Encores! next season.

Well, Trace...my wishful thinking has only resulted in the terrific concert of Promises, Promises...but we can always hope...I gave up my seats last year because so many of the productions were getting dull...I only go if I really want to see a performer or hear a score...

Here's hoping for a season with ADL and Carrie!!
