Depends on how old your Grandma is. If she was a teenager during the 1940's or early 1950's, she's probably going to like 42nd Street or Fiddler better than Hairspray. If she's younger than that, though, I'd go for Hairspray. It characterizes an era that she's going to remember and understand and it's more fun than the other shows! Depends on Grandma, though. Like Matt_G said earlier, maybe you should just expain what the shows are like and let her decide.

Are you sure old people would be able to understand CAROLING OR CHANGE? Even understand the words? Does she have a hearing aid? Why doesn't she want the show to be loud? My grandmother needs the loud shows to hear.

The song on the Tonys, "Lot's Wife," is the emotional low point of the Caroline, or Change- the show actually ends on a hopeful note.

Maybe if you posted a picture of your Granny it would give us a better idea of what kind of show she would like. Is she really short, cuz then she might really like FORBIDDEN BROADWAY>

fiddler is a great choice for older generation. mama mia my grandmother really wanted to see and when she did she loved it. 42nd street is a classic broadway.

Wonderful Town is a good choice, but remember that the subway is being built under their apartment. So every now and then there is a blast heard. That may be too loud. But Fiddler, 42nd Street are also good choices. (Too bad Gypsy hs closed)

Re: Hairsparay. I would vote against it based on what FloweryFriend has said. It is a LOUD musical, probably the most over-mic'ed shows I've ever seen. There is some mild sexual innuendo as well ("Won't go all the way, but I'll go pretty far"). That's not so bad, I know, but I think the volume would rule this one out for Grandma. I wouldn't rule out Phantom if she's never seen it. I'm also with the suggestions of Wonderful Town or 42nd Street.

Visited Grandma tonight.
She has no desire to see Phantom, Fiddler, or 42nd Street.
She has seen them all before and would like to see something new.
I suggested the other possibilities, and she said that she's letting me decide.

Maybe, but...
My mother has seen Mamma Mia twice.
And I think I'd be rather embarrassed having to sit by her as she stood up and danced in the aisle for every song.
