Arick has the petition

I"m not trying to pit anybody against anybody. I only know what I was told growing up. I wasn't there, so I have no proof or firsthand account.

But it would be a little weird for my grandfather to tell his family this was one of the main reasons he left Warner Bros., if it wasn't true (at least in his eyes).

After reading through everything here, what I can gather is that there was a lot of finger-pointing. Jack blamed Harry. Harry blamed Jack. Nobody told Judy or Sid (or my grandfather) what was going on.

Everybody got mad. Seriously mad. And lots of hurt feelings. And ultimately, the collapse of a studio with two brothers who never spoke to each other again.

The rest is he said/she said.

And the only perspective I have is my grandfather's who was (most definitely) there at time. Did he have a "comprehensive overview" of what went down? No. He had only his perspective of it. I think he was most hurt by being so close to Jack, as his righthand associate for decades, and not knowing what he had done in secrecy with the prints.

If my grandparents hadn't been so close to Judy and Sid at the time, I don't think he would have thought so much about it. But he felt like he was made out to be a fool. And that, as they say, was that.

By the way, a little more on the Judy & Sid stuff. My grandparents sailed to Europe (the UK) with them after A Star Is Born was released. My aunt (who was about 18 at the time) "babysat" Liza on the crossing (who was about 10, I think). They stayed in the same hotel with them, and Judy was HORRIBLY depressed. She refused to go out in public except at night, when she would take long walks on the beach by herself. She wouldn't even let Sid go with her.

My grandparents didn't stay friends with them for very long. I think it was a "business" friendship. Hell, I have them myself. Not long after the film was released, everyone went on to other things. But for a brief period of time before, during, and after production at Warners, they were close.

My grandmother especially enjoyed her friendships with the Warner stars. Joan Crawford was one of her dearest friends for decades. (Again, I don't doubt it was a "business" relationship. I always found it fascinating, though.)

Best12bars, thanks so much for all the great behind-the-scenes info on the film.

I thing Best12bars' description fills in the missing gaps in Haver's story. Whether Harry ordered Jack to shorten it (as per Haver) or Jack did it on his own in a fit of spite may never be known but the fact that every single print and negative was cut and destroyed seems to make more logical sense if you follow Best12Bars' story.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Thank you for sharing that story, B12B!

And, all I can say is that, having met you in person, I can vouch for you 100%.

If others have their sides of the story, that would be nice to read. But if all they want to do is bash you, then they will have to go through me to do it.

No one should accuse anyone of lying, ghostlight. And no one bashed B12B, as far as I can see - certainly not me.

History is often subject to wildly varying recollections. And that doesn't require any lies - ask six people what they saw yesterday, and you'll likely get six different stories.

I just thought it was interesting that one of the acknowledged experts on ASIB presented a completely different version of events. People can believe whomever they choose to believe.

Thanks for the advice, Mark. I do try not to tell people that someone else's story "directly contradicts" theirs or that "it's interesting that [someone] came up with a completely opposite story" from theirs.

"I just thought it was interesting [bolding mine] that one of the acknowledged experts on ASIB presented a completely different version of events."

There's that word again. What do you find so interesting about that? Serious question.

Arick has the petition

Once again, the fact that Haver's story contradicts B12B's story does not in any way mean that anyone - Haver or B12B - is lying.

As I said, historical accounts often differ, and this can be due to many things other than lies: poor memories, misinformation, second-hand stories, etc.

And absolutely I find it very interesting that the two accounts differ. Don't you?
#59

Arick has the petition

How is it, that if you say, and presumably find it commonplace that "historical accounts often differ", that you "find it very interesting that the two accounts differ"? Isn't that contradictatory?

And no, I don't find it interesting. As you've said, accounts often differ. I'll ask you again - why do you find it so "very interesting"?
#60

Arick has the petition

Oh, stop it - it'a always interesting when people's stories differ. I don't care how often it happens.

Why do I find ths situation "very interesting"? Well, having produced and sent a petition to Arick, I think it's pretty clear that I am very interested in ASIB. So when I hear two completely different accounts of who ordered the cuts, I find that very interesting. Does that make sense?
#61

Arick has the petition

No. Given your statement that "History is often subject to wildly varying recollections", it seems like a direct contradiction to me. Perhaps there's no meeting of minds to be had here. Good luck with your petition, though. Maybe your acknowledged expert can help you sort it out.

Thanks for your advice regarding accusations, and it's always good to be reminded that we're allowed to believe whomever we choose.

My god, you won't give this up, will you? Yes, history is full of conflicting accounts - and that's interesting! Sheesh.

Ronald Haver, who wrote the book I quoted and restored ASIB, died in 1993.

Have you tried Russia? All kinds of film footage has been found there. James Mason's basement had a secret room filled with classics that had been considered lost, too.
#64

Arick has the petition

I don't know why you're resorting to sarcasm - I think checking into whether Arick has a print is useful, even if the chance is small (which I think it is).
#65

Arick has the petition

I was actually quite serious about Russia, though it really is true that lots of films considered lost forever were found in James Mason's basement. Much older than ASIB. Many silent films.

Fascinating thread that I just now got around to reading. Love the story about your uncle Best12. Would love to hear his other golden era memories!

My hunch is that there is a complete uncut reel out there somewhere but likely not in the hands of an expert private collector or anyone who has any idea what they have is rare and all but non-existant

As Best12 mentioned a lot of films from the 30s through even the 60s were routinely cut by studios and even movie theatre owners and managers for time, content - you name it -- I've seen some art house screenings of films that invariably got one of these butchered prints from archive houses. If these copies are still out there - than I bet one or two original prints of A STAR IS BORN never made it back to Warners....

Regarding THE JITTERBUG from THE WIZARD OF OZ; sadly, early archivists of the movie learned from editors on the film that the footage was destroyed after the first preview (there was apparently only one print ever made that included it). That's one of the great heartbreakers in movie preservation history.

Arick is a FREAK, nothing more, nothing less

I don't think Haver's version and Best12's version are in conflict at all. As a matter of fact I think they complement each other in ways that would have delighted Ron Haver.

What I do think is suspicious, Mark, is how you have combined a coddling, enabling attitude toward a couple of lying creeps with a passive-aggressive attack on Best12's story about his grandfather.

Yes, passive-agressive and, yes, an attack. And to then insincerely claim that you weren't attacking him but only finding him "interesting" is kinda funny, because it makes you sound like a panicked Bugs Bunny suddenly combing the hair of "Such an innnnnn-te-resting monster!"

No, it is not "useful" to "check into" what Arick has. No, it is not. Can I be any more clear? No, it is not useful to anyone...except Arick.

Your meaningless petition only serves to give credence to the pathetic fantasies of Arick and Capporicio and make some of us wonder if you yourself might in cahoots with one of them or both of them.

Arick doesn't have the print, and Best12's grandfather's story corroborates Haver's history.

Cut. Print.
#68

Arick has the petition

I completely disagree with all your points.

Best12 puts all the blame for the cuts on Jack Warner, whereas Haver puts it squarely on Harry Warner, and says Jack fought against the cuts. That's two completely opposite stories, and I think I was quite justified in pointing out the difference. Your opinion of my motive is baseless.

You also seem very concerned about anyone stroking Arick's ego. I couldn't care less about that, and I certainly wouldn't avoid pursuing him just because he might enjoy the attention. What do I care how he feels? I just want to know if he has a print, and although I doubt he does, I will not rest until I get a clear answer.

Arick has the petition

The point is - you will never get a clear answer because Mr. Arick is a liar. If he says he has a print you will never see it, nor has anyone ever seen it, and that includes Mr. Arick because he does not have it. But he'll say nothing - which will just keep adding fuel to the fire, which is what this person craves.
#70

Arick has the petition

So because we're "sure" Arick does not have a print, and because he might enjoy the attention, we should do nothing? I disagree.

As I said earlier, I'm 99% sure he does not have a print. But if there's a 1% chance he does, I (and many other fans) will pursue this until we get an answer. The petition is only the first step. If there is no response, or an unsatisfactory response, we will decide on what next steps to take.

I'm not sure why some of you seem to be so upset with those of us who want an answer. If he doesn't have a print, does it really bother you that much to think he might be getting some unwarranted attention? If he does have a print, don't you want to see it released?

Either way, what's the harm in checking? I'm not asking for help from anyone who doesn't want to get involved.
#71

Arick has the petition

The harm is that you give Arick's sick fantasy credence and in doing so you diminish the efforts of REAL collectors, film preservationists and fans.
#72

Arick has the petition

"I'm not sure why some of you seem to be so upset with those of us who want an answer."

Read my response again - did you not understand its point? Or read Pal Joey's latest response. You will not get an answer that has any meaning - that's the entire point. He will say nothing or he will lie. Those are his only two options, and therefore you will have no answer that has any meaning.

#73

Arick has the petition

Read my response again (actually my last few responses).

The petition is just the first step. I don't expect an answer. This is just to let him know that people have heard the rumors, and that over a thousand took the time to sign a petition. If we don't hear back by Labor Day (and I doubt we will), we will decide on next steps.

As to the statement that the petition will "diminish the efforts of REAL collectors, film preservationists and fans," that makes me smile. It's like saying gay marriage damages straight marriage. Checking into whether Arick has a print or not does no to damage any fans, and in fact many hundreds of "real" fans are behind this effort.

Who is it again who just won't give up?

Sheesh, indeed. I don't have a horse in this race, I couldn't care less about ASIB or collectors, but you're seriously annoying and condescending. If I were at all inclined to be interested, you've definitely turned me off by, as PJ says, your passive-aggressive attacks against Best12, whom I don't even know! Your tactics are ineffective, and have I mentioned you're condescending? You took a nice little personal story and tried to twist it into something else, as much as you may deny that.

Now that's interesting.

I think you've gotten all the traction you're going to get here. Go away?
