Hi,

Me and my friend have no clue if this is true at all, but he just sent me a link to a guys blog that list the changes that have been made to the movie script of the upcoming ITTW film. Please express your thoughts on this...

Thanks, artscallion, I did a search, but I guess I did not do a more specific search as when I did, that thread did not come up.

I can see where they're coming from cutting "Ever After"... It's a good song but it's only really appropriate to end act 1... Since there aren't any acts they can just cut right to the chase.

"No More" being cut is upsetting, but the thing that bothers me the most is the lyric change to "nice is BETTER than good" in "I Know Things Now."

What bothers me a little is that they've cut "Maybe They're Magic," even though they've replaced it with effective dialogue. It wasn't ever a long song, but it set up later events better.
The shifting tenses of "On The Steps of the Palace" also bother me. They just feel sloppy.

EDIT: Although this is a case that I understand and feel was for the better, I wanted to see Meryl Streep in the "Do you think it was a bear?/A bear? Bears are sweet,/Besides, you ever see a bear with forty-foot feet?" sequence.

There was a discussion on the movie script a few weeks back on the movie casting thread. The script is actually quite good. It's VERY faithful to the show minus a few things here and there. I love "No More", but it would kill the pace of the film.

Yeah. God forbid they make ANY changes at all. Even if it's to, you know, improve the transition from stage to screen. People need to stop freaking out about this!

I remember when everyone was complaining to no end about the rumored LES MIS changes. But, once it was all said and done, everyone was (more or less) pretty happy. This is how it works. Changes have to be made, songs have to be cut, lyrics have to be altered. That's how you ADAPT a musical stage property for film.

It wasn't because they adapted the LES MISERABLES movie poorly that the movie sucked. It was because the cast was awful and the director had the need to stick the down everyone's throat. I'm sure with a good cast INTO THE WOODS will triumph.

"Ever After" is cut? Mistake. Sure, it was an act break. But it's also thematically very important to the story -- that happy endings aren't always the ending.... there's often something after the ever after. Bad move.

I can just hear some Hollywood type -- a master at audience stimulation, but knowing little about how to tell an interesting story -- cutting Ever After simply because 'it's an act break' without realizing it goes to the core of what the piece is about. Or, worse, saying, "They'll think the movie's over."

All the changes serve the story, though there are some painful losses for me personally. I also dislike the new On the Steps of the Palace lyrics, and I will miss Ever After (though I understand why it's gone). The inclusion of Cinderella's father (was this cut in the most recent script?) is what puzzled me the most. The draft I saw had Cinderella and her father having a conversation about why he never paid attention to her and he said something about like how it was hard to look at her because she looks so much like her mother? I don't remember it exactly but I remember thinking it was incredibly bizarre and unnecessary. There's already so much going on, why add another thing to keep track of?

You need a new hobby that doesn't include freaking out about every single little script change for a movie that hasn't even been filmed, yet. Please.

Which has nothing to do with my comment. You said people were happy about les mis in the end but that CLEARLY wasn't the case. Start making sense. Please.

kelly2, that bit about Cinderella's father was not from the script. That was from one of the videos of the Old Globe, pre-BWay version that was posted here recently.

No, there is a scene between Cinderella and her father in a draft of the movie script from last year. I read it myself.

This is the clip I'm referring to...starting at about :27. Maybe they went back to this original idea for the version of the script you saw.

Oh, I've never seen that. Maybe that was the inspiration for bringing it back, but the scene in the script was placed (I think, and I read it six months ago so don't shoot me if I'm wrong) when the Prince comes to find Cinderella with the shoe at the end of the "1st act".

The father is dead in the screenplay that's going around.

I completely agree with this statement, but changes do not necessarily mean better. You clearly weren't on BWW when the film of Nine was made--lots of changes were made, and from what I remember, most people here went in open-minded, and it was a dreadful misrepresentation of what was a beautiful show. With the same director attached to this, it's reasonable that some of us should voice concern. There is precedent for both cases.

I just got an updated copy of the script. New changes I noticed -

-Rapunzel hangs herself from the tower with her hair.

-"Giants in the Sky", "Hello Little Girl" & "No One Is Alone" have all been cut.

-The Baker is now described in the screenplay as being "Nipsy Russell-esque"

-Snow White now sings "Boom Crunch" to a bird
