#1A question regarding the vandalized walls on the facade of The Nederlander

I was about to spend most of my afternoon watching the Rent DVD. But, before I did I looked at some of the special features to see what they had and noticed that I didn't watch the one that talked about the wall. Upon watching it Kevin Mcollum sp? gave off the impression that he was okay with people writing on the facade of the theatre as well as the brick wall in the alleyway that leads to the dressing rooms and the backstage area.

I am confused. I thought that the producers of the show were against it due to the fact that they kept cleaning it up and cleaning it up time and time again. Having made frequent trips to The Nederlander towards the end of the show's life that was the impression that I got based upon the fact that there were times that the outside walls were clean and then not to long after people started writing on them again.

There's "Autograph Alley" where various people wrote on the wall. Larson's parents, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, Joan Rivers, etc. That was special.

Then there's a bunch of overzelous fans who can't let seeing the show and meeting the actors be enough. People who need to feel like they're "in" on something special. So they started writing on whatever they could reach.

One was okay and one was not.

I was wasted a few months ago and got the urge to write a tribute to Oliver Platt on the Nederlander wall. I think I passed out before I could do it, though.

blaxx, I am well aware of the threads that you linked to. I even remember the discussion between that one renthead and the rest of us in the thread about the renovations at the theatre. And, how he thought that it was okay and how he thought that it was nothing to get up in arms about with people writing on the walls of the theatre and we were all trying to inform him that he was wrong to think that and that the overly crazed fans were wrong to be writing on the wall.

The question that I am trying to as is this. I was under the impression that the producers were against the writing on the outside walls of the theatre. Thus, they cleaned it up a few times to the point where it got out too out of hand for them to do anything about it. Now, if they were so against it, why would they be talking about how the writing on the outside walls were a good thing. If they were so against it couldn't they have had that special feature on the DVD talk about how the wall inside the theatre is covered in autographs of famous people who have come to visit the show and some select fans who were lucky enough to go backstage rather then talking about the vandalism that took place outside the theatre? I would think that if they were so against what was going on in terms of writing on the outside walls of the theatre then they wouldn't have had that little documentary talk about that.

Well, you are talking about the producers of ReNt vs. the Nerderlander organization, who probably were the ones who were against the vandalism of the building.

Are you sure it was the producers and not the theater OWNERS that were against it? Perhaps THEY are the ones that insisted it being cleaned up...seeing how they OWN the building. And the costs would have been passed on to the production.

Just asking.

If I remember correctly, a group of fans cleaned up the outside of the theater at least once. I'm not sure that the producers or the Nederlander organization really had anything to do with that.

I'm sure the Nederlander Organization had something to say about it.

I do remember hearing a story on here about how someone tried to clean up the outside of the walls of the theatre while waiting for their names to be called for lotto and they got yelled at for trying to clean it up by one of the people running the lotto.
