As for the length of a run--Broadway shows simply didn't run as long back "in the day" nor need to run as long to be seen as hits

How do the current revival of Company and the recent Assassins revival compare with the original productions?

ASSASSINS had never been on Broadway until the Roundabout, so techincally it's not a revival. It was to be produced in 1980, and the sudden Gulf War made producers nervous about a show that could be perceived as anti-American. Then it was picked up again for a Broadway production and scheduled for November 2001. 0911 changed that and forced its cancellation once again.

The COMPANY revival? Compared to the original, it's a mess. 'Nuff said on that point.

Sean, I know that about Assassins--it kind of is a revival production. The original production closed, and this is a new one. In the same city. It's ruled as a revival at the Tonys. It can still be compared in the way shows are in this thread.

I'd be interested in hearig other opinions about Company, as the current revival is anything BUT a mess.

There have been two major revivals of CAROUSEL, one at the New York State Theatre of Lincoln Center in the mid 1960's and one at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Center in 1994. Having seen both productions, I can say that the latter was a superior production in all respects, even considering the fact that John Raitt was in the 1960's revival, re-creating his original role of Billy Bigelow. Even though John Raitt's singing was better than Michael Hayden's, his performance was not as moving as Hayden's. The 1994 production was magical.

It may be a "technical" revival, but ASSASSINS was produced in 1990 OFF-Broadway by Playwrights Horizon. Until the Roundabout, it was NOT produced on Broadway.

Just keeping the record straight.

And yes, compared to the original, COMPANY is a mess.
