The list of films -- from comedies to action flicks to musicals and more -- was compiled from well-known "best-of" surveys and awards lists. The final 10 films in each category were selected by an elite panel of film industry experts, including dozens of well-known actors, producers, directors and critics, which we then put to you in a popular vote.
The results will be revealed during a special two-hour ABC News broadcast, hosted by Tom Bergeron and Cynthia McFadden, on March 22 at 9 p.m. ET. Until then, you may watch clips from the films. Stay tuned for more information on the broadcast. We promise you will see the movies like you've never seen them before.

Posted: 3/21/11 at 10:51pmThat's what I was figuring because it is compiled from other sources and voted on by the public. However, the only one I admit to not having seen is "An American in Paris".

Posted: 3/21/11 at 10:59pmI must confess that I don't "get" An American in Paris. It's got some lovely moments, but I don't think it should really be considered one of the best movie musicals of all time.

Posted: 3/22/11 at 9:50pmCant believe Wizard of Oz is third. I personally think Singing in the Rain shouldve gotten the top spot. I'm obviously biased, as it is my favorite movie, but not only is there great singing and dancing, but its hilarious, even after all these years. It is such a great all-around movie. I love all of the movies in the top 5, but Wizard of Oz and Singing in the Rain are, IMO, unquestionably better than Grease. but to each their own :)

Posted: 3/22/11 at 11:27pm"Wizard of Oz" should have been second. "My Fair Lady" should have been in the top 5 instead of "Grease." Yeah for "The Sound of Music" getting 1st place!

I don't agree with their top ten at all and, for the most part their top 5.
I would have thrown in Gigi and maybe even Oliver.
While Rocky Horrror is fun, it's by no means one of the best musicals ever. I feel the same way about Grease and An American in Paris (parts of which bore me to death).

In the animated film category we had two films which became long running Broadway musicals:
1. The Lion King
2. Toy Story
3. Beauty and the Beast
4. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
5. Fantasia

As far as I am concerned, "Singin' in the Rain" is the best movie musical ever.
So how exactly were the top movies determined? Was this some sort of People's Choice Award version of the AFI best film lists?
(A proud member of AFI for 30+ years by the way!)

I definitely would not have put Grease at #2. I like it, but don't love it.
And Beauty and the Beast is superior to The Lion King, in my opinion. The soundtrack was better, and the animation is just more visually stunning.
