Am I the only person in the world (other than Ben Brantley) who absolutely hated this show???

at least on this board. it was a popular success if not a critical one.
No, BroadwayBaby. You're not. Most of the critics hated it, and you'll come across quite a few people who hated it, including some on this board.
I think, though, even though if you pulled it apart critically, the majority popular opinion may have been pretty positive. I've gotten myself to recognize its flaws, but I can't get those to change how much I enjoyed it.

I liked it. I don't like Adam Pascals voice. Never did, but it still is pretty good. I wish there were more songs by Damian Perkins, I really like his voice.

"Am I the only person in the world (other than Ben Brantley) who absolutely hated this show???"
Of course not. If I recall correctly, it was a very hip, very NY thing to hate Aida. And even amongst the positive or mostly positve reviews I remember reading, they were at best, backhanded compliments.
Charles Isherwood was mostly favorable in his Variety review, but still said it was little more than a built for teen appeal, jellybean-colored tragedy recast as if by the WB: a pretty boy caught between two pretty girls. Fur Shur!
I'm like Emcee. I recognize the show's flaws. But it pushes buttons I like having pushed. I wouldn't say that it's a guilty pleasure because I think it's better than it was initially given credit for being.
But a "great" musical? No way.

In my opinion, it IS great. It was the first show I fell in love with. I have since discovered greater shows, but I have a very special place in my heart for AIDA.
People wanted to hate it from the get-go. For those interested, check out a copy of Adam's second Chatterbox. It's after he'd left the show in '03, and he looks back quote a bit on the types of opinions people held of the show. His brutal honesty is a bit of an eye-opener.
*sad whimper* I miss it so freaking much.
It's a must-have. 'Aida' the musical was the first that I bothered to sit through more than 3x on Broadway, despite its flaws.

Aww Emcee. Thinking about this show seems to make you too sad.
I wish Disney would film a TV version that could become a perennial classic. But NOT with the OBC. I think they're now a bit too old. They all look like thirtysomething surburbanites.
I think it sort of comes and goes lately. Now that it's summer, it's sadder, because the way I remember it was during the hottest months of last year, and galavanting about the general vicinity of that theatre on many brutally hot afternoons. I sort of feel like if I walk over, it'll still be there.
And they *are* all thirtysomething. It seems implied that the characters are in their early twenties, though.
Not worth owning unless you are already a fan of the show. The score is 3rd rate and dull and the talents of the performers wasted. If you must get it look around in used CD stores where you can get it cheap!
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Honestly, it took me a little while to get into the cd but that's mainly b/c I was in the prime of my Wicked obsession so I didn't want to listen to anything else but now I LOVE this soundtrack! It's very good! I would recommend it!

I think it's worth buying for the talent of the performers alone (sort of like Wicked). I personally like it a lot, but even if that's not your style, you can at least appreciate the actors' talents.
I can recognize that the music has its flaws, but it's allowing yourself to see them and just enjoy the music for what it is. All three leads are wonderful, and I absolutely ADORE Adam and Sherie, they were the main reasons I bought the CD to begin with. To me, the three of them seem to overshadow some of the smaller flaws in the score. I say it's worth the buy, it's wonderrfulllllll. I tend to hold out letters when it comes to Adam-ness. *grin*
Ten daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaays. Like that?
I'm sorry, but - bar a couple of numbers - I found the score really bland. I haven't seen the show live, but just going on the cast album nothing would make me want to see the show. As frontrowcentre2 says, good performers trying to sell 3rd rate material isn't enough for me.
Maybe I should give it another chance - I'll play it in the car on the way home tonight and see...
YES Buy it RIGHT now, leave your house and buy it!
