Posted: 3/17/10 at 11:03pmI felt like I was a prisoner on a cruise ship in the 1970's. This misguided thing is pure unadulterated crap. I liked Michael Feinstein more than I liked Edna....similar feeling to Jackie Mason-the first time is great, the second enjoyable, the third-please don't come back to Broadway. The question is WHY....there is a hint left of the original premise and there is not a bit of chemistry bewtween them and the Ladies Who Lunch was a WTF moment. Felt really bad for the 2 chorines....but the stage mangaer had a great voice. Gone by next week- never to return again-Dame- you're not funny anymore-back to OZ.

Evic:
I'm afraid I have to agree with you, both about the show and Dame Edna. In her case, it's definitely a case of diminishing returns. As with Jackie Mason, old material seems.... old. I didn't think Michael Feinstein came off well in this format either.

Posted: 3/18/10 at 10:29amIMO, the problem with the show was Feinstein -- it just didn't work well and the Dame should have had the entire show doing what she does best, of which there were some fragments. And they were the only parts of the show that got laughs. I agree with you about Jackie Mason -- I saw the first, was reasonably entertained, but never went back to any of the others. But the Dame, when left to her own devices, is still a hoot in my book, and, from other people with whom I've talked, in theirs also. Just a matter of taste, I suppose.

THIS is a Broadway show? I have never cared for Michael Feinstein, who seems like a used car salesman with his plastic personality and botox smile.
Dame Edna is fine in very small doses. . . .

I thought it was a lot of fun! Face it, you can't go in expecting Sunday in the Park with George...
Michael's voice sounds beautiful!

Please, Morgaine. Not everything needs to be Sunday in the Park with George. Light, forgettable fun certainly has its place on Broadway. Light fun was all I wanted from this show. It was f***ing wretched.
And sad to say, though everyone seems to be blaming the failure on Feinstein, I didn't think the Dame's dated material was particularly funny. Two performers doing half-assed work, with no support system (i.e. a decent book) to keep them afloat.
The last 30 minutes were some of the longest I've ever experienced in a theater. Mark my words, and you can take this to the bank: this will close before April is through.

I really do have to say that, as someone who really enjoyed the show, and only had seen Edna once before, and never Michael previously, that I think that most Broadway audiences will not be viewing (or criticizing) the show from the same perspective that most of our fellow posters are.
I can TOTALLY understand, after having seen Edna and Michael in previous shows and incarnations, that this show may seem lame or passe, but the houses that I was a part of (having seen the show early in previews and earlier this week) had a great time, and enjoyed the material a good deal. I think it's just a good, creative show.
