"Not a hope in hell."
I knew that, sorry the question didn't sound sarcastic/rhetorical.
Didn't have to answer it douchily, though.

How did you find out about it? Were you browsing a shop or an online store or was it word-of-mouth? Or did you see a poster on the side of a bus? 'Cos when someone says "publicised", they tend to mean there was no big fanfare; it just happened, and the people in the street were none the wiser.

I can't believe anyone would count the 2000 DVD as an actual movie. It is a badly staged taping of a badly staged production. It most certainly doesn't count as anything that approaches a feature film.
The original film is quite awful, then again I just don't think the source material (the musical, not the actual Jesus story) lends itself to film.

Just to pick at some nits, but the 2000 movie was not a version of Gayle Edwards West End production, but of the Broadway revival that was mounted at the Ford (Hilton) theatre (well, rather it was based on that production) the West End Gayle Edwards production was more "period set specific" (1996 at the Lyceum theatre) and much better than what you see on the DVD.
But yes, I do not consider the DVD to be a remale of the Movie since it was never a cinematic release.
ANyways, back to the 96 production at the Lyceum, it wasset insomething like a Roman arena with an amazing almost "in the round" set by John Napier, they even had onstage seating up at the back of the stage. They were also allowed to dismantle the proscenium and the side boxes to get more room.

I think the film has a lot of potential. The 2000 video was pretty terrible. Glenn Carter was certainly not my favorite. In Jerome Pradon's defense, he requested several times NOT to play Judas. He knew he couldn't sing it.
The challenge that JCS faces is making itself current. I've noticed over the past few years that it has become a family show. I think for the film to work, they would need the same edge, the same controversy that resonated with the original show. At the same time, they need to update it's orchestrations, make it more current sounding, but without dramatically changing the score.
Also to work they need a young, hip and famous cast. I doubt any broadway stars will be cast as, unfortunately, they don't bring in the movie ticket sales. But finding an A list celebrity to pull of Jesus and Judas will be difficult. They are both ridiculously hard to sing (just ask Ben Vereen).
So, in my opinion, basically they need someone ridiculously famous who can sing one of the hardest vocals in musical theatre, update it, make it hip and controversial (to adhere to the original spirit of the show) and create an entirely new sound
If it goes through, it will be interesting.

The original film version was the pits. I watched bits & pieces of the revival
I would like to see a movie made of the original source material in the period it takes place.
