AVENUE Q "George Bush!" Lyric-Change Contest

NYTIMES:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/22/theater/22arts-INCLOSING_BRF.html?ref=theater

George W. Bush is not only leaving the White House, he’s also finishing up on Broadway. “For Now,” the closing number in the Tony Award-winning musical “Avenue Q,” asserts that everything in life is temporary — even George W. Bush is “only for now.” But change is coming to those lyrics. A contest that starts on Monday at noon will allow participants to submit suggestions for a new person, place, fad or something else (“global recession”?) to substitute for the soon-to-be-outdated reference. Details and a registration form are at avenueq.com, and the deadline is Jan. 12. The winning phrase will be heard onstage on Jan. 20, the day Barack Obama is inaugurated.

That's disappointing. I was hoping the Tony winning creative team could come up with their own new lyric.
"Winning a Tony this year is like winning Best Attendance in third grade: no one will care but the winner and their mom."
-Kad

"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."

I thought that Marx/Lopez stated in interviews weeks ago that they already had the new lyric??

Probably turned into a marketing stint, with the economy being as is.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

It doesn't say it will be in the show permanently. Only in the performance on January 20th. With the economy the way it is I think it would be funny if they said "Broadway is only for now."

"Hear your lyric onstage just as we post the closing notice!"

I'm hoping they pick a timeless line and inject it into the licensed version, which I imagine currently goes:

(INSERT TOPICAL REFERENCE HERE) is only for now!

Actually, I like that better...

I think this is a good way to get people interested in the show and hopefully keep it running :).
Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

It wouldn't process my entry. Anyone else having the same problem?

Figure my entry is going to be just about everyone's here, since it fits in with the overall theme of the show and is punchy.

Namely, Prop 8.

This is one of the few reasons why I wish I was American. I can't even enter the contest. >>; Although if I did, I would probably want to say 'Sondhiem is only for now...'

Love the man, but he can't be around writing amazing lyrics and compositions forever.

George Bush / WAS only for now!
"Y'know, I think Bertolt Brecht was rolling in his grave."

This seems kind of like a good idea for fans to get involved. I entered a few. It doesn't say we can't enter more then once. re: AVENUE Q 'George Bush!' Lyric-Change Contest

I don't know..I think many people (including myself) would misinterpret this to "Sondheim's work is only a fad and will be forgotten"
