As it should be.
I suppose that "There's Nothing Like a Show on Broadway" could have gotten a Best Song nod since there were only 3 nominees there, but it's hardly a great song.
Honestly, while I enjoyed The Producers and am sure that Rent wasn't as bad as I remembered it, I don't think either really deserved Academy Award nominations.

Posted: 1/31/06 at 10:52amI'm actually surprised Rent didn't get any sound-related awards. The mixing in the movie was very well done. But, overall, I don't think either movie really deserved any awards (save for the sound awards).

Posted: 1/31/06 at 10:52amWell Rent was just okay. With only a few great things about it. The Producers was awful! Uma Thurman was the ONLY positive thing about the film. This year at the movies was about taking risk and making statements in films. The only statement Rent and The Producers made was "broadway musicals dont work on film unless you have a real vision"

I thought Jesse L. Martin should have recieved a nomination....

Posted: 1/31/06 at 10:55amI sort of thought Rent had a legitimate shot at something for sound. Oh well.

I thought Jesse L. Martin should have recieved a nomination....
Over whom?
Here are the nominees:
George Clooney, Syriana
Matt Dillon, Crash
Jake Gyllenhaal, Brokeback Mountain
Paul Giamatti, Cinderella Man
William Hurt, History of Violence
Now, let's look at some of the people who didn't get nominated who could have been:
Bob Hoskins, Mrs. Henderson Presents
Frank Langella, Good Night and Good Luck
Terrence Howard, Crash
Don Cheadle, Crash
Clifton Collins Jr., Capote
Geoffrey Rush, Munich
Ciaran Hinds, Munich
Michael Lonsdale, Munich
Ed Harris, A History of Violence
Richard Jenkins, North Country
Ben Kinsley, Oliver Twist
Peter Sarsgaard, Jarhead
Jeffrey Wright, Syriana
Donald Sutherland, Pride & Prejudice
I know I am leaving off quite a few people here, but even though I thought Jesse L. Martin's performance in Rent was easily the best thing about the movie (which isn't saying a lot), I wouldn't nominate him over any of the people listed above.
I'm curious, who would you have left off from the nominations?

"Uma Thurman was the ONLY positive thing about the film."
I'm sorry, did you just say that?
...I think I just vomited in my mouth a little.

Oh, here we go with the oh-so-sturdy "most people agree with me." I didn't even see the movie, so I could care less, but really, not the strongest argument.

Agreed and well said emcee!
Obviously, "most people" don't agree with you as anyone who has taken a stance one way or the other in this thread disagree with you.
You are certainly welcome and entitled to your own opinion but if you felt the need to respond at all couldn't you have backed it up with a bit more substance?

I especially loved when Rent came out and EVERYONE was like "MOST PEOPLE AGREE WITH ME!!!"
.... really?

luvtheEmcee you think "most people agree with me." is not as strong of a response as what Grommetik said about forceful expulsion in their mouth?
Well here is my support. I have more but did not want to over state it.
Uma Thurman as a would-be actress is the one bit of genuine radiance in this aggressively and pointlessly shiny, noisy spectacle."
-- A.O. Scott, NEW YORK TIMES
Brooks beefed up the parts of Liebkind and Ulla, a sexpot Swedish actress, for Broadway. (She's played in the film by Uma Thurman, who sparkles.) Lawrence Toppman, The Charlotte Observer
Uma Thurman as Ulla, are the only bearable moments of the picture.

Uma Thurman plays the secretary/actress, Ulla, proving she's a capable singer and dancer.

Sure it is. He's expressing HIS opinion. Your expressing yours and "everyone else's."

If there was zerio competition, Martin still wouldn't have deserved a nomination. But with that list...heck, I've barely seen any of the movies this year admittedly, but Howard and Cheadle would have deserved a nom over him hands down ANYWAY. Not a chance.
None of this is a surprise.

I'm not surprised that The Producers didn't get any. It was a critical as well as box office failure.
It needed a director who had some vision and some knowledge of film.
But what really should have happened is they should have just filmed a live performance. It would have come across much better.
Unfortuanately, this will have a big impact on original Broadway stars getting cast in the movies of the same show. Neither the Rent cast or Lane/Broderick could sell a movie on their own. This probably will weigh a lot as Hairspray is being cast. Thats too bad because I think Harvey would be much better than John Travolta (shudder).

I thought "The Producers" might have been nominated for Best Costumes.
I also thought that as a REALLY BIG LONG SHOT that Rosario Dawson might get nominated for Supporting Actress.
I guess Idina won't be getting an Oscar to join Tony anytime soon......

As for Uma Thurman, I thought she was very good in The Producers. However, I have read every legitimate review of that film that I can get my hands on (and that doesn't include the many non-professional website critics), and the reviews for the film and for the performances were mixed. Several top critics have written that Gary Beach's performance was a stand-out in this film (see NY Daily News review). Roger Ebert gave the film a thumbs up and 3 stars.

Yeah, long shot is really understating the chance she had.
I can probably list 10 actresses other than the 5 who were nominated that would have been more deserving.
I really would have liked Rent to be a great film that was deserving of Academy Awards talk, but sadly it fell very short of that mark. (no pun intended).

Regarding Uma Thurman, I read a fabulously bitchy take on her performance but I can't remember where. Here's the gist of it:
"There's a body double for when her dancing is more difficult than step kick step, her singing has been dubbed and she needed at least 10 takes for the dialogue scenes. What exactly did she do to get cast in the movie?"

As I expected.
I thought it would get Best Song too.

I dont know if that was true, but i enjoyed what came out of it. She clearly looked like she was dancing, her singing was not brillant so i dont know why they wouldn't get an AMAZING voice if they were going to have it dubbed, and if you have ever worked on a movie 10 takes is not that many. Martin Scorsese is known to have 50+ takes on some scenes.
