Same, but I just had this fantasy that in some way RENT would be there. I really wanted the cast to perform love heals at the Oscars but I'm sure that you need a nom to actually get to do that.

The suprise isn't neither film got nominated - RENT was pure crap and 'The Producers' while fun, was also underwelming. Anyway, the suprise is only three songs got nominated (when normally five get nominated). I am shocked that song from "Brokeback Mountain" (The Bernie Taupin song, whatever it is called) and Alanis Morrisette song from "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" where not nominated.

I could've maybe, on a good good day see the Producers get nominated for Best Song, but really the song wasn't that good and I can think of five or six betters original movie songs this year as it is.

OMG! I cried so hard when I found out RENT didnt get nominated. ok, Im gonna defend myself here, some people say that the movie doesnt compare to the stage show at all. I am a Canadian, who has no money to go to NY, or the states at all for that matter. When RENT came here on tour and I couldnt go because I couldnt afford it, I was crushed, CRUSHED. I couldnt out of bed for like 2 days. So, naturally, when I heard that revolution studios was doing a movie with all but two main original cast members I was stoked, to say the very least. I took the day off school to go and see it....and it has changed the way I see the world. So yes, it may not be as good as the stage show, and according to some reviewers it is "outdated and beggining to look its age" But I dont care, it deserved something didnt it?

Um, that entirely depends upon who you ask. Clearly, and unfortunately, the Academy did not think so -- and ultimately, that's the opinion that matters for this, yeah?

I think that if either one got any nominations, it should've been Rent. I didn't like the Producers, but I guess some of the music is okay.

It does deserves something.

Your gratitude and money for ticket sales and when you buy the DVD.

However, I can't stress this point enough - Just because you like or love or obsession over something doesn't make it great.

I honestly can't find one category where I think Rent or The Producers deserved a nod more than what got nominated except for "There's Nothing Like a Show on Broadway" for Best Song.

LuvtheEmcee: yes I suppose it does, but I wish I was on the Oscar Academy thingy, then at least I could have my two cents. But alas, I am not. So I shall have to content myself with overbuttered popcorn and the DVD in my basement! Next best thing lol

Yes, ma'am.

Magical_Ms._Mistoffeles_72, if you win an Oscar you could be a member of the Academy. Then vote retroactively to nominate Rent. re: Academy Awards - Rent and Producers Updated On: 1/31/06 at 10:34 PM

I agree. I loved both movies, but I thought the only plausible nomination was for "The Producers" in song, and I would have been SHOCKED if it won, its not a great song. I thought RENT was fabulous also, but I can't think of anything I would give it a nomination for.

If anything, it's good that Rent wasn't nominated for any Razzies... I thought it would show up there.

Reading through this post, I can't believe that ANYONE is shocked over this. Despite its cheesy moments and the fact that it could have been better in a lot of ways, I loved Rent. That said, with the amount of venom that the film has taken from both critics and some fans, I honestly don't see how some people are remotely shocked that it garnered zero noms.

Yes, I am really glad it didn't get any Razzies. I had talked nonstop about it to my friend before it came out in theaters, but then when it didn't do well, she had the grace not to say anything to me about it. I was in her car when they announced over the radio what had been nominated, and I was silently praying that Rent wasn't one of them.

Can't say I'm too surprised that The Producers didn't get any noms. (Though it is interesting to consider that a show which won a record 12 Tony's, as a film couldn't get a single nom as admittedly, a pretty dire movie).

The Rent movie must be a real clunker. It is Februaury and it hasn't even been released here in Australia yet. Release dates have been changed twice, my money is on straight to video/DVD here.

I think the best thing about _Rent_ was Mackenzie Firgens. That was the only part of the movie I liked--when they had the April montage. I left after "Over the Moon." I never walk out of movies, not even _Jeepers Creepers_, but I just couldn't stand it anymore.

Mackenzie Firgens was definitely great... my friend (BackAlleyBaby) and I e-mailed her and this was part of her letter back (inc the whole suicide scene):

"I am actually a really big RENT fan myself and feel so blessed that I got to be a part of my favorite musical. The way that they cut the movie is a little misleading from the trailers/ music videos etc., the coffee shop scene is in there. In the movie the scene focuses more on the test results, but its still the same location. We did actually have a few other scenes that were cut- like a sex scene. We also shot the death scene, but I heard a few rumors that it was a little too gory and looked unnatural in the film. They actually had me in this bathtub that was really really deep. You see rosario sitting on it later in the film which was supposed to be like a throwback to my death scene. The tub was so big that they put me on sandbags so you could actually see me! They even had this whole crazy rig that hooked up to my arm and dripped blood, it was really cool."

In terms of awards, I'm surprised it didn't get a "Best Song" nod esp. since there were only 3 nominations. Yeah, I'm not the hugest fan of SOL but if the Academy bothered to listen to the whole sountrack I feel like Finale B or La Vie Boheme would possibly be deserving. However... did it have to be a new song? Maybe Rent & Producers weren't considered for that reason.

Regarding Best Original Song at the Oscars:

Nothing from Rent was eligible since none of it was original material for film.

The Producers added a new song called "There's Nothing Like a Show on Broadway" which was eligible but didn't get a nomination.

And to comment on the song from Brokeback Mountain not getting a nomination - it wasn't eligible. The song only played on a radio in a background of a scene. For the song to be eligible for Best Original Song it has to be played predominately in a scene or the over the end credits. It didn't meet that criteria.

I am also surprised that Alanis wasn't nominated for the song from Narnia.

There is a bit of controversy as it appears that the song from Crash was included on a CD in 2000 by the same artist which would make it ineligible. Perhaps that nomination will be contested now or after the Awards if the song wins.

it would've been nice, but it was never likely that a musical would be nominated. they have been in the past but let's face it, non musicals do better in the movie theaters.

but i agree that it would've been nice to have a nomination for rent or the producers.

I would like to call the Guinness Book of World Records and nominate "The Producers" for the most underrated movie musical of all times. It wasn't a great film, but I am at a lost at so much negative criticism. (And "Halloween" is still praised by horror fans as being a classic?) Even that movie with Jim Carrey "The Cable Guy" wasn't as panned as The Producers is.

Halloween is actually one of my favorite films of all time and it's interesting that you brought it up.

It is a classic horror film no question. It started so many of the things that have become genre requirements in horror films. Black Christmas incorporated some of the ideas first, but Halloween is the one that broke through to the main stream and is it recognized as a classic in the horror genre.

I love it.

Now, here is my point...

Despite all that I have said above about Halloween it isn't a "great film". Even though it is easily one of my favorite films, I wouldn't put it on my list of best films of all time. It's great within it's sub-genre but not a film that is interpreted as a must see, amazing film across every demographic and ever theatre goer like Casablanca or Gone With the Wind. Despite how much I enjoy Halloween, I recognize that it wasn't an Academy Award worthy film. I am able to separate the fact that just because I enjoy it immensely, it doesn't put it in that caliber.

Sometimes it's really hard to separate emotion and personal interest when making a critical observations about something that you love so much.

Once again, I am really happy that people have so much passion about the Rent film. I am not trying to bash it or say anything negative about people because they like it, but I just can't comprehend the suggestion that it would be an Academy Award worthy film.

I'd love for people to expand beyond the "It was so good.", "I saw it 15 times.", "RENT ROCKS!" type responses and explain why they feel it is an Oscar worthy film. What actors or films would they replace to get Rent nominations and justification for it.

I think it'd make for a very interesting discussion.

Honestly, while I didn't like that many movies that I saw this year (admittedly, I didn't see too many that made the rankings) the nominees were very strong. For example, while I don't think Brokeback was as amazing as everyone makes it out to be, Jake Gyllenhaal was extremely believable. I loved the Rent cast and they excelled at being a "group of friends" but because there is not the same sort of character depth in an 8 person ensemble with a lot of singing compared to a 4-lead-person production it's hard to say that any characters were very strongly developed.

With Cinematography, Rent could have been a potential had they made sure not to have those little set "bloopers." I thought that a lot of the sets were great but with Brokeback (please don't mind me constantly referencing it) I couldn't find those flaws. Costume design - yeah it wasn't all that original but I still thought that they did a great job with it - especially in the sense of adopting the B'way costumes so that they looked better on screen. And the sound was good.

True, I can't really see a place that Rent stood out among everyone else. But a lot of my favorite movies never won Oscars so I'm not going to cry about it.

See, I found most of the cinematograhy of Rent to be a little too "MTV" for my tastes. Lots of constant jerking movements.

But a lot of my favorite movies never won Oscars so I'm not going to cry about it.

Exactly! That's what I am saying. Most of my "favorite" films aren't "Oscar worthy" movies or films that I would say are the "best" and that is perfectly okay. Best and Favorite are too totally different things.

A lot of people seem to think that Rent is an Oscar worthy film and everyone is entitled to that opinion. I just think it makes for a much more interesting conversation if people can expand on that beyond the "I Love It So Much" type responses that people (not just on this thread) typically give.

patronus, thank god there is someone else with sense on this board. i feel like i had to see a different movie than everyone else here. i don't understand how it could even be construed as ok, let alone oscar-caliber.

now i think the producers was underrated, it was a very hilarious comedy.

chicago did not win only because of "star-power", although, they had some wonderfully acted performances (czj, queen, john c. reilly).. the main thing was that it brought a new dimension to the story. one that worked on film, that wouldn't on stage. so they made a stage story into a film. these others are putting a stage show on screen. they're not creating a movie, they're not making it into what it needs to be. they're different mediums and that necessitates different treatment in each medium.
