re: Actor and Actress from a musical that shouls have gotten a Tony Award (

I know this has been mentioned thousands of times and is kind of pointless because her role is just no big enough, but Laura Benanti was glorious as Claudia in Nine.

While I agree that Tonya Pinkins should get a Tony for Caroline Or Change, I do not think she should have won it over Idina Menzel.

Barbara Harris, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever

Vanessa Williams, Into The Woods, though not in when competing against Sutton Foster for Thoroughly Modern Millie

Gregg Edleman, Into the Woods

Sarah Uriarte Berry, Light in the Piazza

And if you could give Tonys to Encores! preformers then Debbie Gravitte would have to get one for her breathtaking preformance in Tenderloin (this show introduced me to the wonder that is Debbie Gravitte)

Did someone actually (and seriously) list Vanessa Williams for INTO THE WOODS? You've got to be kidding me.

Anyway...

All of the usuals that I agree with...

Tonya Pinkins for CAROLINE

Brian S. Mitchell for RAGTIME (even tho I loved Alan Cumming in CABARET, Brian's role was larger and far more challenging.)

PLUS...

Nathan Lane for GUYS & DOLLS (He was textbook-perfect as Nathan Detroit. Gregory Hines won for playing a role that should have been a piano player, not a tap dancer.)

John Malkovich for BURN THIS

Joe Mantello for ANGELS IN AMERICA

Victor Garber for LEND ME A TENOR

Bernadette Peters for SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE

David Carroll for CHESS and for GRAND HOTEL

Yes! David Carroll for Grand Hotel!

On the subject of Vanessa Williams, I tought she played a darker and more frightning witch then Peters and her Last Midnight was much better. In my opinion.

Disagree that Coalhouse Walker Jr. is a bigger part then the MC and I actually feel that the MC is a more challenging role. Maybe not vocally but dramatically it is.

Denis O'Hare and Marc Kudisch for Assassins. actually everyone should have been nominated, it was a perfect cast. But, I actually would have preffered Denis O'Hare winning over Cerveris.

Patti Cohenour for "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" (and I saw all her competition that year). She deserved the award.

Liz Callaway in "Baby" comes to mind as well.

EDIT: Also, Patti LuPone in "Anything Goes."

"Jaws is the Citizen Kane of movies."

Carolee For Parade

And Maria For WIW
...What happened next, was stranger still, a woman breathless and afraid, appeared out of the night, completely dressed in white. She had a secret she would tell, of one who had mistreated her. Her face and frightened gaze, my mind cannot erase...But then she ran from view. She looked so much like you...

I completely disagree, Munkustrap.

Apples and oranges, I suppose.

Nothing you say will convince me that the Emcee is more challenging than Coalhouse.

Loved Alan Cumming. Loved BSM (and I'm usually not a fan of his -- in fact I really haven't liked him in anythings since RAGTIME).

The role of the Emcee is kind of a fun one, in a dark sort of way. He gets to be dirty and play with the chorus girls/boys as well as the audience. (And Joel Grey won a SUPPORTING Tony and Oscar for the role.)

Coalhouse needs to run the gamut of emotion throughout the entire script of RAGTIME and has much, much tougher songs to sing than the Emcee.

Maybe it should have been a tie that year.

Then again, come to think of it, the Tony voters that year were a little weird when it came to shelling out the awards. Who in their right mind would choose THE LION KING over RAGTIME for Best Musical? Thank God the writing awards went the right way...

Marin Mazzie deserves a Tony. She was great in Passion, Ragtime, and Kiss Me, Kate. It's a total unjustice that she has yet to win a Tony in her career.

Others:
Mary Stuart Masterson, Nine
Antonio Bandares, Nine
Corey Reynolds, Hairspray
Kelli O'Hara, The Light in the Piazza
Hunter Foster, Urinetown (wasn't even nominated!?)
Tonya Pinkins, Caroline, or Change
Carolee Carmello, Parade
Isabel Keating, The Boy From Oz
Raul Esparza, Taboo
Idina Menzel, Rent

Theses are my HANDS DOWN should have won....even based on the competition...nothing to do with being a fan of a particular performer:

Antonio Banderas, Nine
Toni Collette, Wild Party
Tonya Pinkins, Caroline or Change

Three of the most amazing performances to grace the modern stage and completely blasphamous that none of them won a tony.

With Vanessa Williams, I liked her singing better than Bernadette but I liked Bernadette's acting better than Vanessa.
