Posted: 3/6/13 at 3:04pmExactly, Playbilly. Actors who give great performances with lousy scene partners have an even more taxing job. Who's to say (for example) that Violet was a standout but Daisy was a stinker? It could very well be the case. They are still two distinct characters who happen to be onstage at the same time. Same as any two-hander, but those actors/actresses are rarely nominated together. Clearly, there are exceptions, like with that example on here. But should Alfred Molina and Eddie Redmayne have been nominated together? Should Nina Arianda and Hugh Dancy be nominated together? I don't see how those examples are different except for the fact that Daisy has to stand there attached at the hip when Violet has a soliloquy and vice versa.

Personally I think it makes a certain kind of logic to do it this way when the role is split between performers. Voters are only going to see one performer, and it seems like a logistical nightmare to try to get all the Tony voters into the specific 25% or 33% of the performances the "designated" actor is in, especially since the "Billy" and "Matilda" producers don't make the schedule known ahead of time.
Obviously it's not going to be a perfect split with the exact same number of voters seeing each actor, but I would assume it probably averages out pretty close. So if they think the actor they see as Billy or Matilda gave the Tony winning performance that season, they'd get that person's vote. If only one of the three was Tony worthy, presumably the people seeing the other two would vote for somebody else. It's not perfect, but the Tonys have never been about consistency or logic in their entire history.
I presume they'll nominate all four as a group, I presume they'll win, and I presume it will be an absolutely adorable moment when they do and the pictures of those tiny little hands holding their awards will make for delightful PR for Broadway as a whole.

What about Daisy Eagan?
Oh there was controversy over Daisy's nomination because she was nominated (and won) in the "featured" category, when clearly Mary Lenox is a leading role. She was in good company: Tammy Grimes was also nominated in the "featured" category for her performance in the title role in THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Posted: 3/6/13 at 9:25pmDid the producers not think she would win over Lea Salonga and thought she had a better chance in Featured?

I assumed that awards groups like to nominate children in the featured/supporting categories (the Oscars are known to do that as well). But then again, I guess Andrea McArdle was an exception to that rule.
Are they (Lea and Daisy) the two youngest winners in their respective categories?
Tom Bosley won the featured Tony for playing the title role in Fiorello!...there are many such examples.

Posted: 3/6/13 at 10:21pmLiza Minnelli is the youngest Lead Actress in a Musical winner - she won her first at age 19. Lea Salonga was 20 when she won.

Posted: 3/6/13 at 11:32pmI would think that you could separate the performances of Violet and Daisy...for example, I like the role of Violet more. So if you can pick a favorite character, you can pick a favorite actor.

Posted: 3/7/13 at 4:36amTom Bosley won a Featured Actor Tony when the hard and fast rule was that actors billed below the title were featured. William Daniels was to be nominated in the Featured Actor category for 1776, but he refused the nomination, believing he was the lead character. (Which he was)

Posted: 3/7/13 at 10:25amDo you think they would consider the fact that nominating just one of the kids could mess with their sales? I don't know how they're figuring out which Matilda performs for which shows, but if one of them wins, ticket sales for the other girls' shows might drop because everyone wants to see the girl who won the Tony.
