thanks for posting that link, playlover. I saw that version of the play and enjoyed it almost as much as the original. Being a big fan of both Driver and Urie, I was in heaven! I hope they have a video with Urie.

Driver was very different than Zach Quinto (different energy and physicality). He really surprised me, I thought he was excellent. Urie too.

I did not see Zach Quinto (thought he was just OK as Tom Wingfield), but I wasn't crazy about Joe Mantello or Ben Shenkman as Louis. I wondered if it was a no-win role, serving its purpose in the play but leaving the actor with an uphill climb. Both Adam and his understudy (who I saw in Perestroika) were magnificent. They changed my perception of Louis.

I finally understand the phrase "I just can't."
I saw Mantello, who was the template. I saw Quinto, who was the second best Louis I've seen after Mantello. In the hands of a very talented actor, this role is a gold mine.

Quinto was the strongest in that production. (I only saw the first cast)

I thought Borle and Porter were his equals.

Adam D. played a better Louis than Schenkman, I thought. Also, Jeffrey Wright's Belize is something that will forever stay with me.

Almost everybody I've ever seen play Louis was better than Schenkman except for the unfortunate guy I saw in a community theater production I left at the first intermish.

Finding Namo, you made me laugh and I should explain. I did not get Louis when I first saw the play in spite of Joe's excellent performance. This was as much about me as anything else. Shenkman I just thought was miscast and not very good in the role. I wondered if Louis couldn't be played by a straight actor, but Adam Driver proved that is not so. I have no idea what his understudy, Eric Bryant's, offstage sexuality is, but he was, if anything, even better than Adam. (Incredibly, he understudied Prior and Joe as well)
