I don't understand someone who does musical theater just to "pay the bills."

There are a hell of a lot more jobs out there that are less work for better pay in a much less volatile industry.

You gotta have some passion for the theater if you're going to subject yourself to the process, which suggests to me that he's just trying to distance himself to appear more mainstream to the AI voters.

Wow... guys, I don't think he's saying he doesn't like musical theater or anything. haha.

Sure, was he maybe slightly overzealous in clarifying that he's definitely not just all about musical theater? Sure. But I don't think the point he was trying to make is that he hates it, by any means. I think he was just saying that ultimately his main goal is to be a recording artist and do music.

The "not having show tunes on my ipod" comment was just his way of explaining that he kind of separates his theater career from his music career- that he's not going to be the kind of person who wants to make an album full of show tunes.

Nothing about anything he said there, to me at least, indicates that he wouldn't ever want to do theater again, or that he didn't enjoy doing it. What I got from it is that theater was a great and fun way for him to maintain some kind of income while also gaining performing experience, but that ultimately he'd still prefer to do music. I don't see what's wrong with that. Some people absolutely love the theater, and feel like that is their home while other projects are just temporary ventures, and some people see theater as a great experience but still ultimately want to do something else in the long run. It's not a crime! :)

And yes, he was probably being a little bit harsher on theater than he might ordinarily be, because unfortunately theater IS looked down upon in the mainstream music industry. It's frustrating that it is, but it is. I don't think he was "burning bridges" at all, because I think most theater producers/directors/etc. probably recognize why he would have made that kind of statement for now. Now, if he were to be eliminated early on Idol, be offered an amazing Broadway job, and turn it down with no other projects in the works? THAT would be more burning bridges because it's basically saying "I'm too good for theater now". But I really don't think he'd do that- or at least, I'd HOPE not :)

I don't need a life that's normal. That's way too far away. But something next to normal would be okay. Something next to normal is what I'd like to try. Close enough to normal to get by.
