Advice for someone acting in their first musical
#1Advice for someone acting in their first musical
Posted: 3/10/12 at 9:21amI wasn't sure whether or not to post this here or on the off-topic board, but I figured here would be better. I'm going to be in my first musical (I've always worked the spotlight or sound) and I'm very new at singing and acting. Just wondering if you guys have any tips to help me. Like: What foods are good and not good to eat? How do I keep my energy up as I writhe around as a lunatic in one scene? How do I not freak out on opening night? and so on and so forth... Any help would really be appreciated!

drink lots of water during the day, even if this means you are up sometimes in the night. Take Complan [from pharmacies or supermarkets] which has vitamins/minerals/iron etc. Its a powder you mix with water into a milk shake. different flavours. Don't eat any spicy foods and drink green tea rather than coffee. Opera singers drink green tea for their vocal cords.
Rest your voice and don't speak if you don't need to [when not on stage that is]
Be the character you are playing, don't act it.
Plus, always warm your voice up before a performance...i.e... exercises up and down the scales.

Avoid dairy if it makes you phlegmy
Make sure to get enough sleep
If you're well- rehearsed, you won't freak out
Remember to act while you sing- treat a song like a monologue

The Ethel Merman School of How to perform in a musical
1) Do everything out front
2) Totally ignore your scene partner
3) Upstage everyone. and I mean everyone.
4) Sing to the balcony
5) Gesticulate like crazy even if it doesn't make sense.
