Personally I think the current SPAMALOT cast is tired and just not as funny as the originals. With the OBC, the show was a laugh riot. Without them...not as much. I guess the second time seeing it and not getting caught up in Python on stage (love me some python!) I saw that it really wasn't a great show. A good sure, maybe. But thats about it.
AVENUE Q, however, remains a delight. I've seen three different casts, and loved it each time. Howie Michael Smith is a great Princeton/Rod as well. It's not as flashy, but what it lacks in spectacle, it makes up for in charm, intelegence, and wit.
See Q.
Honestly i'd say Spamalot.
If you asked what album to listen to i'd be far say Avenue Q.
But Spam is a VERY entertaining show live. While aveQ is awesome. If i had to pick to see one live i'd see Spam (i've seen both shows btw)

Avenue Q without a doubt.
I have seen both shows and in my opinion Avenue Q is ten times better.
I just *knew* without opening this thread that people would be down on Spamalot - it appears to be the whipping-boy of BWW and has been for well over a year!
Having said that, I have seen both Ave Q and Spamalot in both NY and London and had differing reactions on different occasions. I'm not a huge fan of Monty Python but I am of DHP and I had the best time I've ever had in a musical the first few times I saw Spamalot on Broadway. Genuinely laugh-till-it-hurts moments - and the recognition for me wasn't about Monty Python, more about familiar musical genres. And lots of extremely silly asides ("Hey!")
I didn't enjoy it quite as much in London without the likes of Christian Borle and Michael McGrath (let alone DHP, obv), so I'm not sure how well the current Broadway cast carry it off.
As has been said already, Avenue Q is a bit less spectacular and a bit more intimate, but is also VERY funny.
In conclusion, I don't think I've reached a conclusion: read about both shows and try to determine which resonates with you most! Did you grow up watching Sesame Street and Diff'rent Strokes? Or Monty Python films and ALW ??? (Doesn't really matter if you liked them or not!)
Avenue Q!!!

CATSNYrevival, lovin' the avatar.
I don't know if I made myself clear before but:
"Avenue Q "
No way!!! SPAMALOT FOR SURE!!!
Spamalot!!!
I'm a huge fan of Monty Python but Spamalot was a BIG disappointment.
I love both shows. But read between the lines:
I have seen Spamalot once. Avenue Q SIX TIMES.
One other thing:
AVENUE Q is my favorite show ever.
EVER!
My advice, Q!
OR IT WILL SUCK TO BE YOU. GET IT. GOT IT. GOOD.
One other thing: See Forbidden Broadway instead of Spamalot. FB is funnier and they have a great Spamalot number. I like Forbidden Broadway even more than Avenue Q.

OK, on topic now, I'm torn on this one too. The current cast of Spamalot is fine but they're not the originals and, in this case, it makes a difference. The current cast of Avenue Q is awesome. hemmmmmm. hawwwwwww. OK, go with Spamalot for now but catch Avenue Q soon?
Or see Spamalot and student rush for Q if you're a student (or is it lottery).
Or see Ave Q and do cheap Spamalot SRO.

They are both really funny, but they are quite different.
See 'em both.
Although I will say that most people I talk to like Q. Spamalot seems to have a "Love it or Hate It" thing going with very little in between.

Does anyone know if Michael McGrath is back in Spamalot? He's still listed in Playbill as Patsy.
Without a question, Avenue Q. Material is better on every level, not to mention it's entirely original.
Spamalot
Avenue Q! Spamalot was such a disappointment.
