Let me add that while the performance seemed to have soared into dizzying heights...let us not underestimate the power of the audience.
I don't think I have EVER felt as much excitement, love and energy flowing from an audience in my life from an "ordinary" performance (meaning NOT closing night, after a Tony win, someone's last, etc.) Even with that being said...the audience reaction MET those types of performances.
I had a man (my age) with his two teenage sons sitting next to me. The gentleman (I seem to strike up conversations with strangers at the theater all the time.) kept just saying, "Wow." And this was at intermission. They seem to be no strangers to theater as we discussed a few other shows, but the boys were obviously moved as well.
Wow, indeed.
Yeah, the audience was electric last night ~ possibly in response to crap from a thread that's now deleted...at least on some of the audience's part. And the palpable chemistry between cast and audience truly was electric.

Remember how Raul had it all sewn up last year?
If awards a foregone conclusion, what exactly is the point?
Flatline
Allison Janney is giving a performance for the ages.
It would be a crime if she lost.

I personally don't care about either.
I saw 9 to 5 on Saturday night. It was a good show. Not great and I can see why it got the reviews that it did. It was not worth the hype that it was getting before it even opened up with people saying that it is going to be a huge hit before it even opened up.
That being said, I think that Alison's performance was nothing special at all.
I would love to see ripley win. If she doesn't Id be upset but I wouldn't care nearly as much as when Raul's Tony was stolen from him.

Allison Janney (I really respect the sh*t out of her, a tall figure skater "making it" in TV/film) -- is an accomplished film actress, and has received awards for that work.
Alice Ripley has been proving herself in Musical Theater for YEARS. If she were giving a pretty good performance in a pretty good role, then it might make sense for her to be challenged by a newcomer who blows away the audience (and people debate whether Ms. Janney accomplishes this).
But she's giving a star performance in a highly praised musical, and so it would make me wonder what's going on in the minds of Tony voters if they awarded Allison over Alice (as if there are no other contenders).
As for the Thread Title, ...take a week off and rest her voice completely.

God I love her.
Foster just said that to get a reaction out of people. He's stirring the pot again. No one is that dumb.
I think.
i agree with winston. i saw 9 to 5 yesterday and it was...ok. nothing special. i see no reason why Allison Janney should take it over Ripley.
