madbrian, Allison Pill would be great as Agnes. She's just so good at committing to a character that you can't shake her choices easily.

Amanda Plummer is old enough to play Dr. Livingstone now; it might be fun to see her do a production somewhere. A list of Other actresses I'd like to see in the role would include Melissa Leo, Amy Morton, Edie Falco, and Mary-Louise Parker. For Mother Superior: Dianne Wiest or Vanessa Redgrave. Alison Pill, Elisabeth Moss, or Lily Rabe would be wonderful as Agnes.
I asked a question not long ago on the other board about Carrie Fisher. Someone mentioned that they remembered Fisher leaving unexpectedly, after only performing a short period of time, and being replaced full-time by Plunkett. Does anyone remember if that's an accurate representation of the situation?

An aside: Why does the "cray cray" moniker only get applied to female performers? An actress who clearly relishes quirky roles and has worked non-stop in film, television, and theatre for 30 straight years isn't presently working on the New York stage, so she must be "cray cray" (subtext: difficult)? Interesting.
I think it's supposed to be "women are called a bitch" and men aren't. I wasn't implying she was a bitch or difficult. I was implying that I thought she was loony. I hear Mandy Patinkin is cray cray, too. AND difficult.

I never said it was absolute, I even said "I think" after it. You seem to be bugged by the comment, which I thought was innocuous, but whatever. Just don't try to act like I'm speaking in the coded language of sexism, because I wasn't.

Meg Tilly is meant to be in a production here (Victoria, BC) next Summer, after her *really* well done performance last year in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. I can't wait to see her play a different role from the film.

I would love to see Meg as the psychiatrist on stage. She was the only thing I liked about the film. I absolutely hated both Fonda and Bancroft in it, especially after seeing Ashley and Page on Broadway.

She may not have much stage experience, but I know of few actresses of her generation with so much warmth and, in equal parts, edge. By the way have you seen Burstyn on Political Animals? She's terrific.

Yes, Meg Tilly played Martha last summer in British Columbia. And by all accounts she was excellent.

I've always thought that "still waters ran deep" with Meg. I wish she would act more. I know she has had other passions and interests, and has been successful at them as well.
But I miss her acting!
I say this, understanding full well that she IS acting ... just not where I can see her!

I agree, b12b. It seems like she is getting back into acting on a large scale now, having done two Canadian television series in the last three years (her first film/TV work since the mid-1990s) as well as Martha on stage. I think British Columbia is her home base now. The thought of her performing Dr. Livingstone onstage is really exciting, even though there's pretty much no chance I'd be able to see it!

Deborah Ann Woll of True Blood would be a lovely Agnes.
Catherine Keener would be good but I don't think she likes doing stage work. I remember when she did Burn This a few years ago she talled a lot about how stagework made her too nervous.

Keener is one of my favorite film actresses, but she wasn't very good in BURN THIS and definitely seemed uncomfortable on stage. It's not a surprise that she hasn't been back since.

I think the idea of Viola Davis as Dr.Livingston sounds terrific! I can just imagine what seeing her and Cherry Jones on the same stage would be like.
Wonder why a revival of the play hasn't come along, as this thread shows, there's so much potential for a top notch ensemble.

Yes that is true. Fisher took over from Plummer with much fanfare (they even edited her into the cool TV commercial---damn why isn't that on youtube!)
She missed lots of performances though (Plunkett was the understudy) and eventually left after only like 2 months or so I think. Plunkett took over full time and then went on tour with Ashley and Mercedes McCambridge.
This was right around the time that Fisher's drug use was getting really bad and the story she documented in Postcards from the Edge starts right around this time.

Saw the tour with Elizabeth Ashley/mercedes mccambridge/maryann plunkett....the performaces that Maryann Plunkett gave was so haunting it amazed me...One of the huge things about the character that E Ashley played was that she couldnt quit smoking and somehow did....in the movie she smoked non-stop and it never mentioned the 'miracle" that she quit at all....I did love Meg Tilly in the movie.....

I think Lee Remick played Dr. Livingstone during part of the Boston tryout. I heard she was quite good but left the show by mutual agreement because of creative differences with the director & writer. Ashley replaced her several days later in Boston.
