Spelling Bee: I love the harmonies in "The I Love You Song"

RENT: The piano part towards the beginning of "I'll Cover You (Reprise)"

Fiddler on the Roof: When he just says---"I don't know." in "Tradition"

Beauty & the Beast: In "Transformation" right after Belle says 'I love you' there is this amazing silence and then the orchestra quietly comes back. Whoa, call me a sap but that mess gives me chills!

Crazy For You: Silence---then "TAXI! Grand Central Station!"

No one is alone.

In Anything Goes (1987), "Friendship" when Patti goes: "'Quack quack quack'? What do I look like, a duck? I'm not singing 'quack quack quack', you gotta think of something else--" Her delivery of this has had me in stitches for like, ten years. I don't think I've ever failed to laugh.

A Little Night Music, "You Must Meet My Wife": Glynis Johns' delivery of "My word," and "Sorry--Anne."

Assassins (revival), "Ballad of Booth": When NPH and Michael Cerveris both sing "You turned your spite into Civil War..." I mean, I can practically visualize Michael's spitting.

A Chorus Line, "I Can Do That": "One morning sis won't go to daaance class."

This list makes it seem like I only listen to cast recordings that start with an A, but this is just coincidence.

ETA: Wait, here's a non-A one. Evita, "Requiem for Evita": The "E-VEEE-TA! E-VEEE-TA! E-VEEE-TA!" will probably never stop giving me chills.

Wait, one more from Evita, "Oh What a Circus": The way Patti sings "So share my glory, so share my coffin," mostly because she says "cof-fin". Oh, Patti, I like everything you do. Updated On: 3/23/06 at 11:29 AM

Martin Guerre 1999 - "Why?" - The three part harmony towards the end of their fight is fantastic.

Miss Saigon - "Please" - Probably the most emotional song in the show, but when Kim realizes Chris is there in Bangkok, I lose it. Sappy lyrics, but GORGEOUS music.

Company London Revival - "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" - In the bitch-session break, I love the very last "I hate you!" squeezed in just before they start singing again.

Rent - "Seasons of Love" - The opening piano chords have become iconic in musical theatre and never fail to transport me to seeing the show with the original cast before the recording was released. I returned to the show two more times in a month just to hear the score.

Rent - "Rent" - The final "We're not gonna pay rent!" harmony was even more electrifying on stage than on any recording (the German recording comes closest). The movie completely screwed up that number when they provided no explanation as to why they decided not to pay their rent at the start. That was probably the single biggest mistake in the film (of which there are many to choose).

I Love My Wife - "By Threes" - The piano break (as well as the entire piano accompaniment) is jaw-dropping. Seriously. The best piano part I've ever heard in any musical.

Caroline, or Change - "Dotty and Caroline" - I just love Dotty's recitative melody ("Listen to them frogs..."). I wish it been used more in the score.

Carrie - "And Eve Was Weak" - Betty's final "Amen!" give me chills.

Goldilocks - "The Beast in You" - "Darling, what did you do provoke those dogs?" cracks me up every time.

It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman! - "You've Got Possibilities" - "I'm not gonna bite you...yet" made me fall in love with Linda Lavin.

The Threepenny Opera - First Act Finale - I love the driving final bars of the finale.

Once on This Island - "And the Gods Heard Her Prayer" - "More amusing than mangos" still cracks me up.

Bye, Bye Birdie - "The Telephone Song" - I love the interjections of "If ya gotta go, that's the way to go" and "He's in love with Kim. Kin's in love with him."

Bye, Bye Birdie - "Sincere" - I love the brass that come in just after "If you're really sincere (bump buh-duh!)" This was highlighted by the choreography so well in the film with the cheerleaders. I also love Birdie's "Oh my baby! Oh yeah!" towards the end. One of Broadway's most electrifying and exciting numbers. I would love to see what Jerry Mitchell could do with the show.

Passion OLC - "No One Has Ever Loved Me" - The extended version of this song sung by Michael Ball is extraordinary. His declaration "I love Fosca. Not the way that she loves me. But I love Fosca and nothing will come of it" is sublime.

The Witches of Eastwick - "I Wish I May" - Ok, this one is really selfish and stupid, but every time I hear the flying music, I get chills and then I get PISSED OFF because the flying mechanism didn't work at the performance I attended and they just sat on the sofa and waved their arms. It was VERY awkward and confusing. The conductor skipped ahead in the score and then it ended suddenly with a blackout. There theatre was in total silence and we could see and hear the actors walk off the stage. There was an announcement made that "unfortunately, the Witches were unable to fly at this performance" and the audience sort of looked around bewildered. I heard the effect was fantastic, but I never got to see it.

OBC of Oliver - Georgia Brown singing As Long As He Needs Me, there's a slight catch in her voice when she sings, "I miss him so much when he is gone"

OBC of A Chorus Line - Dance for grandma! Dance for grandma!

OBC of Company - Stritch "Does anyone still wear a hat?"

OBC of The Secret Garden - Lily's Eyes key change

I love everything Kerry Butler does on record.
Especially this one: "In my ivory tower life was just a hostess snack... {and then she switches into this soul-like voice with a growl in the voice} but NOW I've tasted chocolate, and I'm never going back!"

And I also love her soulful take on "Suddenly Seymour" at the end of LSOH.

Another one...in the Assassins Revival Recording, I get goosebumps and literally start crying during the Tesas Book Depository scene when the Assassins are all singing different lines leading up to the gun shot. Then the silence and the orchestra plays slow and loud...brilliant!

Company-most of Ladies Who Lunch

Rent-Seasons of Love opening chords.

Rent-gotta agree with Mister Matt about the last few "We're not gonna pay Rent!"

Wicked-This is my favorite moment of all. The violin during No Good Deed after she comes in with "one questions haunts and hurts". Wow. Goosebump city.

OOTI-I just have the OLC. But I love the harmonized "Papa Ge, don't come around me", and the harmonies between Ti Moune and Mama at "can't you see that he's in terrible danger, what must I do!" And the guy who sings Rain on the OLC (sorry, don't know his name) is unbelievable I love his "and let there be...Rain!"

Rent-5 words. "When your heart has expired!"

Les Miz-harmonies when they all come in at the same time in One Day More.

DRS-"I just want someone to love me...for my money!" God, I love Norbert.

Company-my friend Emily and I have this inside joke with how high Susan goes at "Agressive!" in Poor Baby, so I love it.

POTO-the opening chords at the beginning of the title song.

Li'l Abner:
-Stubby Kaye's "Key-rect!" during "Jubilation T. Cornpone"

The Last Five Years:
-"I'm gesticulating with my left hand and-- ah! There's Cathy!"
-The final "Goodbye" and the violins that follow

Rent:
-Angel's "Kiss me, it's beginning to snow"
-The harmony between Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal, "...and when you're dying in America, at the end of the millenium... you're not alone... I'm not alone..." etc.
-Daphne's "Every word."
-The end of "Finale B", when everyone joins in the number.
-I agree, elphieisperky - "When your heart has expired."

Les Miserables:
-"Two-four-six-oh-ONE" from "Who Am I?" always brings tears to my eyes
-"M'sieur, L'Mayor, you'll wear a different chaaaaiiiin" because it sound slike it's coming from Terrence Mann's toes.
-The slow cymbal roll during "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" at "Oh, my friends, my frieeeeeeeends"
-The Fantine/Eponine harmony during the finale
-The crescendo of "Do You Hear the People Sing?" in the finale, from a whisper to one of the most powerful things I've ever heard.

The Scarlet Pimpernel:
-"Like a falcon in... the DIVE!" God, I love Terrence Mann.

Beauty and the Beast:
-Terrence again: the "money note" at the end of "If I Can't Love Her"

All Shook Up:
-Mark Price's "It Hurts Me," when he softens the song to "Waiting... to hold you so tight, yes, waiting... to kiss you goodnight..."
-Sharon Wilkins's "I don't seem to mind somehow..." to the end of "There's Always Me"
-Leah Hocking's "Heh, heh, heh," during "Let Yourself Go"

A Chorus Line:
-The opening notes of "At the Ballet"
-"And he'd say, Maggie do you want to dance?... And I'd say, "Daddy, I would love to dance." I don't know the actress's name who plays Maggie, but she brings tears to my eyes with that reading.
-"God, I'm a dancer - a dancer dances!" from "Music and the Mirror"

Wicked:
-When Glinda and Elphaba sing harmony in "For Good"
-"Defying Gravity", from "So if you care to find me..."
-"For the first time, I feel...wicked."

tick, tick... BOOM!:
-Raul. Even though he's a BIG moment, I can't pick just one.
-Jonathan Larson singing "Boho Days", especially "So let's start drinking, before we start thinking, 'Is this a life?'"
-"Why?" It's my favorite song on the album.
-"No more... Taking a shower in the kitchen, while your roommate's eating breakfast, and you're getting water on his cornflakes."

You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown:
-"She nibbles her pencil!... She's human!"

God, there's SO MANY.

[edit: Thank you, BSoBW2!]

Well, apart from saying that I, too, love the harmonies from The I Love You Song from Spelling Bee, I'm going to focus on one cd, the Les Miz Original London Cast (which I prefer over the OBCR).

In the Work Song
-when a convict says "SWEET JESUS"
-when the convict goes "I know she'll wait, I know that she'll be true"
-when Javert sings "and I'm Javert, do not forget my name, do not forget me, 24601"
-when the bishop sings "higher pla-an"

In I Dreamed a Dream
-when Fantine sort of riffs a little on "but the tigers come a-a-at night"

In Master of the House
-pretty much the whole song

In Look Down
-I love Gavroche's part in this! Especially the way he says "society" and "piety"

In Stars
-the violin in the pbeginning
-when Javert riffs on "gra-a-ce"

In Little People
-"the world is big but little people turn it around"
-"a flea can bite the bottom of the pope in Rome"

In Do You Hear the People Sing?
-when everyone joins in, it makes me cry every time
-"Will you give all you can give so that our banner may advance,
some will fall, and some will live, will you stand up and take your chance? The blood of the martyrs will water the meadows of France!"

In I Saw Him Once
-when Cosette goes up to the high notes

In In My Life
-when Marius sings "And my life seems to stop as if something is over and something has scarcely begun"

In A Heart Full of Love
-when Eponine sings a harmony under Cosette and Marius
-"he was never mine to lose"
-when the three of them sing the harmony at the end

In On My Own
-only when Sutton Foster sings it, but when she goes "all my life, I've only been pretending"

In A Little Fall of Rain<----my favorite song
-the harmony with Eponine and Marius

In Finale
-when the people are singing "Do You Hear the People Sing?" and it starts quietly and gets louder and louder

Yes, that's a lot, but these all make me smile.

And then, do you know Monseiur Marius, I believe I was a little in love with you.

Yeah, but I love how Sutton goes up to the D instead of the C sharp (I think, it might just be a C), and then comes down.

"All my life, I've only been pre-ten-en-ding!"

Lovliness.

A few more I've been thinking about:

110 in the Shade - every time Robert Horton says "Great God a'mighty" in Melisande

Caroline or Change: "Dig for the money...down in the laundry"

My Fair Lady: "She'll regret it...oh she'll regret it...it's DOOMED before they even take the vow..."

LSOH: "I don't know, I don't KNOOOOOOOWWWWWWW I have so, so many strong, reservations...."

Lion King: The chorus of Endless Night "You promised you'd be here..." that whole thing....

Scarlet Pimpernel: In Where's the Girl: "Come again..." every time he says that - just love it.

All Shook Up: "I don't want to love you....Ed....but I do..." I've listened to that song umpteen times and it STILL makes me laugh.

Avenue Q: "You gotta go after the things you want when you're still in your priiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime..."

And my embarassing one: I can't help it, but I LOVE this lyric in Big: "The fickle finger flicked and who it picked was me, I want to rise out of the blue, and I feel really special, so now...can I go now?" It's one of the most vulnerable moments in any show.

I love Anika Noni Rose's voice in 'Roosevelt Petrucius Coleslaw' from CAROLINE, OR CHANGE on "Look here Roosevelt, see here Ro'..." Makes me melt. Pretty much anything Anika sings is gorgeous.

Also, at the end of 'How Glory Goes' from FLOYD COLLINS, when Floyd sings "I can see so far!..." Gives me chills every time.
