I know I didn't spell the name correctly, but does anyone know if there is a database online of all his Broadway drawings?

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Thanks! Couldn't find it because I was unfamilar with the spelling of his name.

He didn't do any of Peter Pan. re: Al Hirschtfield drawings?

He definately did do Peter Pan. When I was at the exhibit at the Musuem of New York City last year, or maybe it was 2 years ago? They had a series of drawings he did of Mary Martin from the opening night.
A lot of his drawings aren't on that site.

Oh really? That is good to know, Mary Martin's PETER PAN is a historic part of theatrical history.

His West Side Story picture is phenomenal. I love his Hairspray drawing but its not on this site. Ive only seen it on the back of Hairspray's souvenier (sp) program.

He is irreplaceable in the context of Broadway history - but it would honor his memory further if a new artist can continue the tradition of capturing Broadway's most vivid moments and personalities.

I agree with everything said, BUT, does he deserve to have a theater named after him?

Why don't we have the "Steven Sondheim theater" or the "Oscar Hammerstein theater"

Found the Mary Martin and Cathy Rigby one.

Haven't found Sandy Duncan or Jean Arthur.

Sorry... I have never seen one of Sandy or Jean... you sure he did them??? If you look on that Hirschtfield website that is in an ealier post, and view the one for "Jerome Robbins Broadway", you can see Charlotte d'Amboise as Peter Pan.... shes just to the right of Jeromes head. Its similar to the Mary Martin one, just a different face. Updated On: 8/12/04 at 01:25 AM

There is actually another guy named Ken Fallin, who does similar drawings to Hirschfeld. He does all the characatures for the "Forbidden Broadway" posters... check out his website here.... www.kenfallin.com Updated On: 8/12/04 at 01:39 AM

Margo Feiden Gallery on Madison in the low 60s is his representative.

Fiddle with that name and you will undoubtedly find a site.

As for the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, I'd be much more concerned and pissed off that there is an American Airlines Theatre, Cadillac Winter Garden Theatre and Ford Center.

There's a Hirschtfield drawing downstairs in the dressing room area (to your left when you walk out of the elevator) of the Opera House at Kennedy Center. It looks like it could be Peter Pan. There is a tree house and some young people that could be lost boys, but the Peter Pan looks like Lynn Redgrave to me. It's always fun to find the Ninas. :)

I *love* Al Hirschfeld. He has such an amazing way with a line that just captures the essence of a person (or show). I loved his drawing for The Producers, which sadly I believe was one of the last ones he created.

Has anyone else seen Fantasia 2000? The Rhapsody in Blue segment was just amazing.
