Mamet does not write women's parts very well.
I also think the play needs a bit of updating to bring it into the modern technology age.
That being said, drop the "Richard" and just call the character Roma and cast Jodie Foster.
Mamet can only write one woman: deceptive whore.

Doll, you should have seen what he wrote for me before I had to bring in a ghost writer. That scene where I wear the ruffles was completely different in his script. --Patti LuPone, State and Main

I don't think either of the characters in THE ANARCHIST are deceptive whores...
Kad, you are wrong!! In THE VERDICT, she was deceptive English whore. Oh. Waht's that? The Rampling is really English? Uh...well...that's different...
It'd never happen, but if Blake's character IS in this production, I'd love to see Jon Hamm.

I'd disagree about Mamet not writing women well - IMO he writes all three very well in 'A Boston Marriage'
I love that play!!

Maybe he just writes lesbians well.
OR...and stay with me here...maybe (just maybe)...he's a good writer in general.

I think Mamet is better in performance than in reading. I remember reading Glengarry and thinking it was a really bad play. But when I saw a good performance of it, I changed my mind. I had to see the characters in action to appreciate it.
