Alan Rickman says he's in Sweeney Todd

It's about 12 1/2 minutes into the interview. The host mentions that he's doing that next and Rickman says "I'll be singing a duet with Johnny Depp."

What role would he even play?

Hmm...I suppose it's possible. He doesn't strike me as the best fit for Turpin, but I'm pretty sure Rickman could do just about anything.

apparently Laura Michelle Kelly pulled out of the London FOLLIES concert (where Stritch will be Carlotta) because of her SWEENEY TODD filming schedule -- she must be Johanna then?

LMK is, what, 21? They'll have to age her tons for the beggar woman. Unless she's playing her in flashback or something.

I can certainly see Rickman as the Judge, much more so than Christopher Lee.

How old is Laura Michelle Kelly (at least in relation to Depp)?

ETA: Thanks colleen. A bit of an age difference would be fine, and she could be young-ish (it could be argued that she could have been a very young mother, but that would make her... what? 6?)

Well, as much as I love Jim Broadbent, I'd much prefer Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin (wasn't Broadbent the last person rumored for the role?).
But when did New Hampshire become--Such a backward wasteland of seatbelt hating crazies?...I mean, only 40 people actually live there. The others are just visitors who come for the tax-free liquor and three inches of novelty coastline. John Hodgeman on The Daily Show (1-30-07)

Depp starts rehearsals for the film adaptation of STEPHEN SONDHEIM's musical in London next month (JAN07), but he's preparing for the part already by slitting imaginary throats to the soundtrack of DIES IRAE (DAY OF WRATH) - the 13th century Latin Hymn traditionally used in the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. A source tells British newspaper the Daily Express, "Johnny is always very conscientious in his roles. Now he says he has to get into the mind set of a serial killer. He wants to feel adept with the razor blades, to feel as if they were an extension of his arm. "But he's terrifying everyone by walking around his home booming out the song - making an arc with his arm when he slits a person's throat. "Sweeney calls his razors his 'friends' and in this song the Demon Barber pours out his love to his blades."

Sorry to jack, but Stritch is playing Carlotta? Even in a concert setting, that's terrible, terrible casting.

oooh, I like the idea of Alan Rickman being Judge Turpin. That would be great! But... does he sing? Not that it seems to matter a lot for this movie, considering the casting so far.

Broadbend was Zidler in Moulin Rouge right? I'm pretty sure he can sing, but just so you know it isn't him singing "Like A Virgin" in the film, if you're basing that voice off of the idea of him as the Beadle.


Btw, he is so a great idea for The Beadle.

Yes and No. One side I chuckle and the other I'm thinking to myself, He's nuts.

I wonder when the official announcement will be made about Rickman as The Judge and Broadbent as The Beadle. Along with also if Laura Michelle Kelly will be playing Johanna or The Beggar Woman.

When I read the headline in thought Snape in Sweeney Todd. I can picture him as the Judge though.

I always sorta thought Christopher Plummer would be excellent as Turpin. But Rickman could work just as well

I agree Rickman could do anything. He's pretty scary as Snape, I can only imagine how scary he'd be singing his "Johanna" (please tell me that's in the movie?)

And wow, gotta love Johnny's dedication. Slitting throats to the Dies Irae--which is what the Ballad chorus is. That's so awesome!
