Posted: 7/21/10 at 1:36pmAn All-Female 1776? I have never heard of such a thing. It raises myriad questions, all of which will need to be explored in depth.

New revenue stream for the Edwards family.
They must be thrilled!
Being staged as a "concert" production only leads to the obvious question -- could they get away with an all female cast any other way???

Posted: 7/21/10 at 8:36pmI want to know if they have transposed the score or if they are singing it as written. Nothing I have read so far from any news source has addressed this.

Glitter- I was wondering the same thing about the score-
Funny note- when I did 1776, the director had this thing about always casting a woman in a guys role and hoping nobody would notice- so he cast Samuel Chase with a woman and only listed her intials in the program- didn't work- my parents opening night said - you were able to find all those men and came up short 1- you couldn't have moved some people around so they didn't have to use that butch woman?

Posted: 7/21/10 at 10:27pmI live in Kansas City, and MTH does some really wonderful concerts (their Big River last year was top-notch), so I might take in the show. I actually don't know a whole lot about 1776 besides catching the middle of the movie during the 4th.

One question, but I think I already know the answer: How is the all-male "Forum" at Williamstown Theatre Fest considered a brilliant idea, and an all-female "1776" condemned as "idiotic"?
"1776" is one of my all-time favorite shows, and I think this is a great idea and I wish I could see it. I for one think it would be thrilling to hear some of those great ballads power-belted out by a great female performer! And I would bet that there is fun to be had making sly references to the women in the current political scene, as the book of "1776" always seems to be relevant to current events and personalities. For a show with set in such a definite time and place, it's amazingly timeless.

Well, if I do recall, the director of the all-male "Forum" (whose name I'm blanking on right now) stated that the concept is more of an homage to Greek theatre, when all plays were performed with just men. Therefore, that concept makes sense. A female 1776, on the other hand, does not IMHO

can an all female version of La Cage aux Folles be far behind? And I can't wait to see a woman play Tevye. Or a man play Eliza Doolittle.
Huh, what is the point of this?

Where did the all-male forum come from and who called it idiotic?
I don't get why people are so vexed by this.

Posted: 7/22/10 at 9:11pmI just prefer my bold concepts to have some sort of merit behind them, rather than "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if..?".

Posted: 7/22/10 at 9:46pmI don't see what's so bold about it. Maybe if it were an actual production, but it's just a concert.

Nobody has mentioned it in the midst of terms like "vision" and "bold concept", but if this keeps up its really a slap in
the face to male actors.
Is it "Vision" or "Discrimination"??
I don't particularly feel that way, but some may.
Just sayin...
