I plan on auditioning for a local theatre's production of Jesus Christ Superstar. However, I am not a trained singer. I sing within an alto range and need help on find a really good audition song. I was planning on singing I Want TO Go To Hollywood, however, I cannot find the sheet music for it. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I've been singing Razzle Dazzle in voice class, and my voice teacher says that it's a really good audition song if you put character into it. best of luck!
some good ones are he's a tramp from disney's lady and the tramp, or day by day from godspell,on a clear day accapella can be really fabulous (if you get a chance listen to the barbra striesand version from 1969)

Godspell is pretty overused in auditions.

If you are auditioning for a rock/pop musical, then audition with rock/pop material, even if it's not from a show. A perfect song for SUPERSTAR is Billy Joel's (S)HE'S GOT A WAY Perform it as if you were singing about the Christ ("He's got a light around him," etc)

That's not neccesarily good. Most shows including JCS have audition requirements that include doing songs from musicals. RENT is the only exception.
I'm an alto and I sang "Roxie" from Chicago for my last audition. It is very fun to sing :)

Violet Tree, this is my bread and butter so I have a little experience in what I'm talking about. If there are any requirements, xoblue didn't mention them. The best choice for a rock musical is something that is appropriate stylistically and shows off actor chops. Unless one is auditioning for Herod, singing Kander and Ebb (for example) at a JCS audition only demonstrates the actor's ignorance regarding the material.

Different directors want different things..It's that simple. Updated On: 12/29/05 at 11:21 PM

That has absolutely nothing to do with anything. If a director wants to hear something different, he/she will request it at the audition. The perfomer has to use common sense when prepping an audition, not waste time second-guessing, as you so ridiculously advocate.
'Nuff said.

I think you mistook what I said. Updated On: 12/31/05 at 12:14 AM
I think Violet Tree meant that the actor should find out from the director/stage manager what they want in the audition. So you both are kinda on the same lines... Violet Tree was trying to say that an actor should prep appropriately for an audition.
