To the OP,

I understand your boredom at plays. A great many of them nowadays are indeed boring. Others are painful. Some are both. In the good old days, things were much better.

I'd say today's musicals are scarcely more satisfying. But at least you have an orchestra playing something at fairly regular intervals to interrupt the boredom or bad writing. You're more likely to keep awake during those moments. You might even get to hear a decent tune every now and then. There's also dancing, sets, costumes.... Every little bit helps.

I remember visiting NYC a few years back. I saw Book of Mormon, Catch Me If You Can, and How to Succeed in Business, etc., -- but guess what brought me to a state of deep thought and complete absorption as I walked home from Lincoln Center?  It was WAR HORSE!  If it had been only one show for me during that trip, it would have been War Horse!

There are only two kinds of theater: GOOD theater and BAD theater. I feel sorry for people who categorically ignore any STYLE of theater, whether it be musicals, plays, experimental, etc.

2.5 hours' Lion King bored me to death while 3hour45mins' Long Day's Journey kept me engaged and prompted me to get another ticket so I can see it again after reading the play and appreciate how great it is both on paper and in person.

I have to admit that I find musicals tend to be more boring--especially on Broadway.

"You are not the only one. I have two friends that refuse to see a play. They will only see musicals. It is a preference that they, and you, are certainly entitled to. I like both."

Plays put me to sleep. I can't think of the last time I saw one. So count me in with your friends. I see only musicals.

What I want to know is, who is TweetyPie1?
