One of my friends auditioned for the school because you are right they have quite an alumni list. She auditioned for this school and AMDA, she chose AMDA because while AADA has done good things for some people, they are OUT OF MONEY. They are having really big financial problems and dont know how much longer they will last. (Mind you this is what Ive heard, dont wanna get my ass chewed)

I went for Saturday courses and really didn't learn much of anything. My teacher never gave criticism. It was all "you're wonderful. Just wonderful."

I took a lot of courses there in high school. It was fun.
Is it great. Nope. There are many better schools.
I just went for fun though.

AMDA differs from AADA with the musical theatre program. AMDA offers it, AADA doesn't.

broadwaybound - you'll get out of amda what you put into it! They have a lot of working alumni, and its gotten so much better in recent years. A lot of people criticize it, but if they didn't go there then i'm not sure where they get that right. You sound excited and I predict you'll love it! Don't listen to all the negativity!

OH yeah im totally excited, alot of people have told me that the people who are negative about the school never finished the program adn coulnt handle it. Im really gonna get a slap in the face for that one, but thats what ive been told. Everyone I talk to know loves it there!re: American Academy of the Dramatic Arts

The school is considered a good school and not as expensive as Julliard et al.

HOWEVER, they used to have a sort of strange way of inviting back the students for the 2nd year (you could enroll for the first year and then you had to be INVITED back). Their method was pretty shot gun and they lost a lot of good people that way (people who did not get invited back have gone on to become respected and successful actors, and these were people who were told to quit the business.

A bit strange. The professors were very good in general. I don't know who is currently teaching there.

actually, someone I know who Did not finish college was brought in by Scamda for a teaching job for next year. Not sure if they took the job but, i personally know that i'd want someone with a degree teaching me...

btw broadwaybondchik, I DO NOT in any way want you to think I am putting you down for going to this school. I think it's wonderful you are going for your dreams even though our opinions are different on the schools, best of luck. Updated On: 6/14/04 at 09:24 AM

just in reference to the being invited back for your second year at AMDA - it is merely a formality. When I was there there wasn't a single person who didn't get asked to return. And there were some students who shouldn't have been there in the first place! But hey - I guess thats what makes life interesting!

You could NOT return if you were not invited back

... someone who was not asked back after the first year: singer/guitarist Jason Mraz. of all the untalented people that go to AMDA (not that they all are untalented), i wonder why they would turn down someone with such a fantastic voice as he has.

I went to AMDA and I swear that Jason Mraz thing was a rumor. We also heard that Keanu Reeves went there but was kicked out for smoking pot. I had a ton of friends who did nothing BUT smoke pot and they all got asked back!

i guess it could still be a rumor, but i did hear it first-hand from his mouth.

he was getting more into playing guitar while he was in nyc but when he was not asked to return to AMDA, he said he felt like a failure. his song "bright eyes" is about him returning back home after his year at AMDA if you want to check that out also.

My best friend back in high school ended up going to AADA after graduation. She did get a degree there and really enjoyed it, HOWEVER now she is going back to school to study PR. The thing is, she was really passionate about acting before she ever went to that school. I don't think it did much for her at all.
