Theater of the Stars was clearly negligent. Their actions are indefensible. They owe the Tarzan advance money and should have found a way to return it immediately to AMTSJ.
But cancellations are, as Manos said, a part of the fabric of show business. And, the remarks made by the AMTSJ person who said that the Tarzan production meant two million dollars to AMTSJ is either a remark taken out of context or is a remark intended to deliberately mislead the public. It might mean two million dollars in cash flow. But it could never mean two million dollars in profit or production overages to cover overhead. Shows that play the short lengths of time that run at regionals such as AMTSJ simply do not make that kind of money - not even in a single year, let alone a single show. A theatre that has been in the kind of financial distress that AMTSJ has been in, i.e. one in debt, operates on cash flow. The elimination of the show and thus the cash flow did AMTSJ in because they were likely already maxed out in their ability to borrow operating funds because of their debt load. If they had replaced the show or Atlanta had replaced the show, used the ticket sales of the replacement show, this could have been averted.
AMTSJ has been in financial trouble for years. This was simply the straw that broke the camel's back. While no one can defend Atlanta's position or actions, the closing of AMTSJ is not all their fault. AMTSJ has been walking a tightrope since Stewart Slater was fired over five years ago when Silicon Valley imploded.
Just a few more background facts, folks.
