Ana Gasteyer and Kathy Voytko in "Passion"

http://leisureblogs.chicagotribune.com/the_theater_loop/2007/07/ana-gasteyer-re.html#more

It's to play at Chicago's Shakespeare Theatre in October with director Gary Griffin and sets to be designed by Eugene Lee. Wow, I can't wait! Hopefully they'll get an awesome Giorgio as well.

WHHAAATT????

I'd have a curious fascination seeing Ana as Fosca...but...I don't know. Maybe I underrate her as a dramatic actress but...wow. That is casting I'd never seen coming.

Oh man, I was excited enough about this production because I'd finally get to see Passion live. But this will be very interesting. Can't wait to see it.

Very interesting casting. I doubt Gasteyer has the range to sing Clara, plus she'd probably make an interesting Fosca. I wish I could see this but it's not happening for me, oh well, looking forward to reading reviews and such.

ahhh why is this in October??! I would DIE to see her Fosca. At first I was a bit confused but now I can totally see it and see her kicking it out of the park. I can hear her singing it too.

From what I know of Passion, Voytko can absolutely sing Clara.

Hey, as long as they pay...anything that brings money to PASSION, I'm good with.
I would love to see her, then again, I'd love any chance to see PASSION.

I'm sure she has the range to play Clara, but she's certainly not a Clara type.

I wish I could see this. Too bad it's in Chicago.
And I don't know how much the Wicked tweens bombarded Ana. But hopefully they will have moved on by now.

re: Ana Gasteyer and Kathy Voytko in 'Passion'

Wouldn't that be weird if it was so successful it transfered to NY as a revival? And Sunday was on at the same time?! My two favorite shows at once...I couldn't handle it.

Of course, that would only be in my dreams.

I'd love to see Audra play Fosca at some point. I didn't think she had the vulnerability before, but after 110 in the Shade, I think she might be able to make an awesome Fosca. Or if Donna Murphy would play Fosca again....

Well now I'm in fantasy land...

yeah I think we might be waiting a while for Audra's Fosca but she brought Clara to a whole 'nother level in my opinion.

I don't think McDonald has the voice or the right persona to play Fosca. If anything she is a Clara even if I don't think she ever made a winning Clara (hardly as strong and jealous as Marin Mazzie made Clara in the original production). I don't think she is right for either one of the female leads.
I honestly can't think of anyone besides Murphy who would be right for the role but I'm biased. I'd have to see someone tackle Fosca and then decide whether I like them or not. Donna Murphy was just too brilliant in this show.

re: Ana Gasteyer and Kathy Voytko in 'Passion'

I think she could have the right voice for Fosca...of course the keys would probably be raised up to about the keys Maria Friedman used for the London Production...and think if her seeming to feel more free and safe on stage) keep improving as they have been she could make a great Fosca...now those touting her for Mama Rose I'm inclined to disagree with though.

No, I don't think her character choices were all right for Passion, at least opposite Lupone. I think with better direction she could have been. I'd like a slightly cooler Clara, but more warmth than Marin's Clara. It's tough to pull off, and it all depends who played Fosca.

But true, I don't think anyone could come close to Donna Murphy's Fosca.

re: Ana Gasteyer and Kathy Voytko in 'Passion'

I have no doubt that Audra could play Fosca and pull it off. It'd be her own take and probably very different from Donna's but that's why I love Audra. I feel that she's an actress with such depth that takes on such challenges that there really isn't a whole lot that should couldn't play. I would have not really thought of her as Clara before but I thought her performance was great. With all respect to Marin Mazzie I had never noticed Clara all that much before but with Audra I found myself lIking Clara and thought it was so layered. I just loved that production in general and thought Patti was incredible.

re: Ana Gasteyer and Kathy Voytko in 'Passion'

But the problem is you're not supposed to "like" Clara, it completely throws off the balance of the show. Mazzie managed to make Clara completely likable in that she wasn't a bitch by any means, but she was cool, and from the get-go she made sure you knew that this relationship was simply not going to work out, the "Happiness" was just momentary, Mazzie always had that inform her performance. McDonald simply played the ingenue side of Clara without allowing us to see the cool, aloof side of the relationship she held with Giorgio. The show is NOT about Clara.
I simply adored McDonald in 110 IN THE SHADE but I don't think she could pull off all the layers and nuances that Murphy brought out in the character (neither did LuPone).
