In an article discussing the casting of MATILDA composer/lyricist Time Minchin in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR
'And I can't write lyrics,' Lloyd Webber proffers. So have they talked about collaborating? 'Not really,' he says.
Minchin adds: 'If the right thing was there, of course I would. But the lyrics and music are so interconnected that, apart from Lloyd Webber and maybe a couple of others, I would say no.'
'I completely understand that,' Lloyd Webber says. 'I would love to have some lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, you know, but he thinks of everything, it is too connected for him.'

Oh god. They're both my favourites, jointly, but this could not happen xD
Now he's just completely senile.
Well, if anything could ever make me love a Lloyd Webber score, this would be it.
Memorable, dare I say popular, melodies paired with clever, insightful lyrics... nah, it could never happen. It would make too much sense.
(Cue the brickbats from the "Sondheim is God" crowd.)
This was a joke, right?
Sondheim lyrics with Lloyd-Webber music.
Sorry, just sounds like some social experiment gone horribly wrong.
Easy to joke about sure, but I'd be interested to see what they would come up with.
Isn't there a YouTube of the two of them doing something together for a Cameron Mackintosh tribute?
Surely that should suffice.
Webber has written some great stuff (and well, some not so great stuff) but then again some of Sondheim's material is a lot stronger than others, too. They're two pros and I would be legitimately interested to see what would happen if they worked together. If it sucks, it sucks but it's better than nothing new from either one of them.
There's a saying in the rock world: "Other than the Beatles, geniuses go solo. There are no good supergroups."
I don't know how well that would apply with a theatrical supergroup- it's never really been tried.
Too bad the time for a real collaboration has passed.
If Sondheim could write the music also, then we'd have something. Imagine if he had gone ahead with Sunset Boulevard?
I'm sure any collaboration of theirs would be a fascinating power struggle behind the scenes. I'd theoretically love to see what they came up with, but I don't think I would have high hopes for it.
Both men like to have a lot of control of their projects--I'd say Lloyd-Webber more so, much to his detriment.
The last time Sondheim wrote "just the lyrics" with anyone for a Broadway show was "Do I Hear a Waltz?" in 1965, so I'm guessing no.
I don't blame Webber for thinking it would be nice, but even he realizes it ain't gonna happen.
They could write the sequel to LOVE NEVER DIES.
Phantom of the Forum
Aspects of Overtures
Sunday in the Park With Cats
West Side Boulevard
Jesus Christ, Gypsy
I'd like to see them work on something. I agree that it isn't the optimal time and that time has passed.
But they can still squeeze something incredible out. At least incredible compared to the slew of decorated crap and producer hyped, cheapened dreck that's all the rage.
While I don't think Lloyd Webber keeps a bottle of gin in his piano bench, Sondheim's issues with Rogers would prob be worse with L-W.
Maybe when Hal Prince kicks, they'll do a tribute song.

"Send In the Cats."
^ LMAO.
But hasn't Sondheim always said that he'll never write only lyrics again?

Why would Sondheim want to lower himself to Webber's standards?
Stop it Besty!- I almost choked on fricking ice cream!
