"Angels in America" Opera to be Telecast on PBS

Looks like Great Performances is going to telecast the Peter Eotvos' opera of "Angels" in 2006. It was filmed at its premier in 2004 at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. I for one can't wait to hear/see this, if nothing else to see Julia Migenes at Harper. My VCR will be set!

Stupid question. Is it sung in English or French?

Not a stupid question at all. The libretto is in English. Eotvos' wife Mari Mezei condensed Kushner's play into 2 acts running roughly 2:30 with intermission. From reports from the premiere, the opera is an interesting blend of sung and spoken work accompanied by a 27 piece 3 voice amplified ensemble.

Does this mean it will be out on DVD? I know that the Great Performances of Oklahoma was sold, but do they sell all of the Great Performances or just certain ones?

I think whether it is released on DVD or not depends on who owns the rights to the tape. "Angels" was telecast in France on their gay network, Pink TV, so I assume the station owns the rights to the tape. "Great Performances" probably bought the tape to broadcast in the USA, but I doubt they own distribution rights to it.

Have you seen Julia Migenes' one woman show? It's on DVD, but at the moment I can't think of the title - something with the word Diva in it. - she acts out several scenes from famous operas and explains to the audience exactly what's going on,(for those new to the opera scene) and she is absolutely Hilarious -and sounds magnificent.

Sorry to bring this up again so many years later, but did this ever air? I find a lot of references on the web about the announcement, but none of the actual broadcast. Did it happen? I can't find anything at the IMDB.

In never aired in my area. I *think* it was shown in ny and some other stations, but not everywhere.

ANGELS IN AMERICA - THE OPERA premiered on Thirteen on Sunday, April 29, 2007 at 9:00 p.m., with repeat broadcasts on Saturday, May 5, 2007, Saturday, February, 16, 2008, and Monday, June 28, 2010. Our rights to broadcast the program expired in August 2010.
