It happens all the time.
Personally though?
Hm, well before I saw the Les Mis for the first time for a school trip for its like, 5th official performance, I had done my research & psyching up for the cast.
But Alexander Gemignani was still sickly, so I saw Victor Hawks pull off Jean Valjean.
But it wasn't so bad, I actually thought he did a remarkable job considering the minimal practice time.
I eventually did see Alexander do it too though.
But i hasn't happened yet to me me yet to the point where I have been uncosolably depressed.
The first time I saw Wicked the ticket had been a birthday present I begged for. Idina was still in the cast and I SO wanted to see her. I took the train up from Princeton as soon as my conference was over and walked up to the theatre in the rain. Only to walk in and see the dreaded "In tonight's performance the role of..." sign with "Elphaba" and "Kristy Cates" firmly in place. I almost cried, but I wanted to see the show.
I'm so glad I did. Turns out it was Kristy's second performance as Elphie and she did an amazing job. I missed Idina, but I loved it anyway.
Other than that, I've been lucky.

this one time, i went to see RTFAN, but amanda24 went on in his place.
My main reason to see Beauty and the Beast and The Fantasticks wasn't to see particular actors but I was kind of disappointed when John Tartaglia and Tom Jones were out in their respective shows. I still enjoyed the shows, though.

I doubt you would have enjoyed Idina as much as you did Kristy. After Idina's "Defying Gravity" my ears were ringing.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - hoping to see John Lithgow and I didn't. But the guy who went on for him was good....but I was still upset. It was my first Broadway show by the way, so that's probably why it will stay with me forever.
Amanda was asking about plays, people, not musicals!
