IMO, I think that the reader at least should be in his/her teens. It's can be emotionally heavy at times, & there are some *coughsexualcough* moments.

I second that. I'd say at the VERY least 18.

I would say 16 or 17 would be appropriate. The second poster nailed it on the head when they said it can be very emotionally heavy. I pretty much broke down in the middle of quiet study one day because of it. So I think the moral is: If you feel you can handle it, read it(but not in public).

It's very deep, I hate putting ages on things, but it needs to be a person mature enough to handle the homosexual emotions and the strains that life can present.

I'd say if the person can see RENT and fully understand it (not just like the music and costumes, you know?) then go for it. I liked RENT way back in middle school and I'm sure I could have gotten a lot out of this book back then. It is very sexually exploit, but a great and inspiring book.

I'm 16 and I know people younger who are fans of Anthony's. It's his life. And it's real life. Whoever can't handle it just shouldnt read it, but you could be mature at whatever age suits you. The sex scenes in the book were there for a 'shock' factor - it's called "memories of love, loss and the musical RENT', not 'memories of love, loss, RENT and Ear Sex'
Its a touching story rather than a 'sexual' book. It's really a great memoir. His writing style is phenomenal.

And the other thing about the Phantom Lady was, Bert, she realized, in the city that never sleeps... What did she realize, Kitten? That all the songs she'd listened to, all the love songs, that they were only songs. What's wrong with that? Nothing, if you don't believe in them. But she did, you see. She believed in enchanted evenings, and she believed that a small cloud passed overhead and cried down on a flower bed, and she even believed there was breakfast to be had... Where? On Pluto. The mysterious, icy wastes of Pluto.

Yup- 16 at the least, not to put limits on any certain subject matter, but I don't think that anyone younger would fully understand.

I find that funny too, especially when some of the sex is when he was YOUNGER than 18.

I don't know how you could put an age on this sort of thing. I'd say if you're a fan of Anthony's, and you're a fan of RENT, go for it. If you can handle RENT, I don't see why the book would be a problem.

What I would suggest, however, is if you read it and you don't find yourself connecting to it, understanding it, enjoying it or what have you...revisit it when you're older. But it can't hurt to give it go when you're young, I say.

I'm younger than 18 & I loved the book. I understood it completely & I had tears in my eyes at some parts. I can't stop saying wonderful things about this book re: Anthony Rapps Book for....

That is part of the problem with society today. Young people feel forced to grow up WAAAYYY to fast. I'm glad you 'youngsters' read it and understood it...

BUT...

No, FindingNamo, 18 is NOT ridiculous. There are things in the book that no-one under MAYBE 16 has any business being exposed to. You all are trying to grow up to fast re: Anthony Rapps Book for....

Talk to your parents about it, make sure they know you're reading it is all I suggest.

What about the chilllllllllldrennnnnnnnn?

"That is part of the problem with society today." They've been saying since the 1950s, hon, the decade that brought about the Dawn of the Teenager.

"There are things in that book that anyone under MAYBE 16 has NO BUSINESS being exposed to."

And how is it YOU get to decide that? There are things in that book that many a young queer guy hungers to be exposed to, and Anthony Rapp obviously very much seeks to be a role model. Let people who want to read the book read the book. Except for one really satisfying punch out, it's not like it's a violent book.

You may unclutch your pearls now, EponineAmneris.

Eponine dear... "You all are trying to grow up to fast"... I am 21 and by no means trying to grow up too fast. I just feel that there is no reason for being that prude. Reading about something and going out to do it are two completely different things.

I'm 31 and simply trying to show concern. Forgive me for that.

I am by no means a prude. I am just making suggestions.

Eponine I just don't agree. 18...do you honestly think that most 18 year olds do not have enough maturity to read this book?

re: Anthony Rapps Book for....#21

Posted: 6/22/06 at 6:34pm

I think 14 is probably an appropriate age. There is a lot that young queer teens could glean from this book that could possible offer some comfort and guidance through the process of self-discovery and coming out.

And, honestly, many (if not most) 14 year olds are already partaking in many of the activities discussed in the book.

I don't understand how these type of issues can be age categorized.

Some 20+ year old's would find it hysterical to read and laugh at every use of the word sex and see the book only to be made fun of.

On the other hand, there are those who are in thier early teens that find the book interesting, helpful and inspiring.

It's not the age, it's the person.

I'm sure kids over 13 and under 18, have been exposed to much more, and a lot more sexual things than this book.

There are kids under 18, partying, drinking, smoking, having sex (which I'm not saying is right.) I'm saying kids under 18 can do a lot worse than read a book that talks about sex!
